To Huston

You took from me a precious stone
Which stand as a blueprint to my destiny,
Return to the old ruggered rock which
Lay behind the gushing spring of life
I live here not for you, do not make hell
Out of me; I have been strong enough
Return that which you took from me
We could settle our hearts with a song
Of the hunters that we once learnt to sing
In your eyes lies my dream and yours in me.

The Two Nation America

The Two Nation America
It was in Huston some years ago my ship was being repaired,
it was a dry ship – no alcohol allowed- its skipper was teetotal
we had to be too, petty tyranny. I walked ashore to liquor store.
It was a poor district where roads and pavements had been
neglected. Factories closed down, no point spending money on
people who didn’t work. I felt nervous by those leering black faces
thought they were ready to rob me and steal my booze.

The store a place, young men grouped, seeing me going in made
acid remarks about my whiteness, they made grunting noses.
To ask for wine was a waste of time, bourbon and beer, I bought
four bottles of vodka and a bottle of seven up to dispel the idea
I came here for thr booze alone. Coming out of the store I saw a blue
lettered bar across the road it had air-condition, I had a beer and
later many more. Then it was dawn time to go on board.
a cruising patrol car stopped, to tell me I was lucky to be alive, yet
I had four bottles of vodka in a bag; and yes, a bottle coca cola too.

The Mare and I

The Mare and I

Georgia on my mind, I remember a song the sweetness of America,
I have never been there but once I was in Huston, Texas, my ship
was there for repairs. I rented a car and drove deep into
the countryside which was hot and dry Just like in a western movie,
I stopped at a dud farm and they gave an old mare to ride.
When tired of riding the mare and I walked side by side along dusty
tracks and tumbleweeds and I thought of Indians who lived here
and left no history behind other than baddies in western movies.

Both the mare and I knew while there might be historic changes and
upheaval, human nature remains the same; it is about war and peace,
love, hate and jealousy...and finally death. But not quite that, above
all there is dignity and respect for life. Texas has a big sun and it was
setting. “Home on the ranch” a song remembered. Time to get back
to the ocean and admire the dolphins and listen to their song.

A Dog Called America

A Dog Called America.

When sailing from Huston, Texas, to Aruba
we had an unwanted guest on board, a big
friendly dog, the captain called shore and
It turned out it belonged to the coast guard.
And since we had a small terrier *****, this
was a love story gone eschew. The dog,
it really was huge, maybe a St Bernard breed
settled in my cabin, this I think because it
assumed, since I was the cook, thus must
be the pack leader. Days later when the ship
docked in Aruba, a man from the consulate
came and took the dog ashore.
We were sorry to see this gentle giant leave us
…. Yes, we called him America.

I Can Sing

I Can Sing

I sing
a voice like an angel.
Some call me a songbird.
A melody,
Sweet singing and soft sounds
Come from my lips.
High.
Low.
Medium.
Not quite a Mariah Carey or a Whitney Huston “yet”.
I lift my hands and I use my body.
I tap my feet to the beat.
I stand tall like a tree and plant my feet hip width apart.
I open my mouth and out comes music.

His words have left me in o0z
N' ahhh's; his heart is as BIG
as a pot-of-gold; of Texas
his spirit is as long as the grand
~canyon of Arizona;and
I would follow him to the ends
of A rainbow even though it can
not be done, for I do not be~
long to him. I do know that I am
that lucky charm beneath this pen
I can say I will love him always!
