Angie and Ruby, the Honky Tonk Women,
wanted to paint the honkytonk. Their heads started swimmin'
when I says, "Ruby, Tuesday's a good day to paint.
It should be sunny, but even if it ain't,
I'll have my radio blasting The Rolling Stones.
What kind of colors you want? What tones?"
"Paint it Black" says Ruby, but Angie, she says "white".
I says, "Tumblin' Dice can decide which is right."
Ruby said, "We got this old black paint from DuPont -
Angie, You Can't Always Get What You Want".
I painted up the honkytonk, nothing more to discuss.
I gazed at some Wild Horses, and picked a mean ol' cuss,
tired of all these women folks's bickering and fuss.
I had paint Under My Thumb, and my clothes were in a muss
as I saddled up the horse, thinking, Some Girls are pretty funny,
and I won't paint no more honkytonks for that kind of money.
My soul leaves sixteen minutes after I reach the bed.
It’s not that I have it timed, it’s that I know
Without knowing how I know
Hear those gentle puffy breaths?
They come from my body, automatically.
I am not in there, and she does not care.
No concern. At last she can fully relax.
Because I have been released.
My soul is zooming around, checking out the night people.
I travel from alley to honkytonk, looking on, amazed.
As people do what people do naturally in the middle of the night.
Thinking the world cannot see them.
I see, and I smirk. Glad I know how to astral travel.
Thank you Daddy for this gift.
He lumped it into being a psychic.
I attribute it to being an empath; no matter.
I am here now.
It is now three thirty a.m.
There is a silence in the world that cannot be explained.
People have paired up and are having sex in cars or apartments.
There is a smell of urine in the air thanks to the homeless.
I travel to a far off hill and enjoy a hoot owl’s call.
Bam! The silver thread pulls me back to my body.
I go in kicking and screaming
as usual
old honkytonk piano
the ghosts of your notes
hover above you
silence becomes longing
for rhythm and rollicking songs
lost to time.

Second Place
Friday night beneath the blue neon lights
A honkytonk bar near surrounding heights
Full of cigarette smoke and loud music,
Boilermakers of whiskey and beer... winning trick.
The jukebox playing, "We Got Tonight." Young and able
He glances my way as he stands by the pool table.
Taking my breath away as he turns my way and say.
Do you want to dance? He holds my hand and away.
The minute that he touched my neck small bumps
Appear, the hair stood straight causing a lump
In my throat. I let him be my master.
Emotions of excitement arouse, my heart beats faster.
Bathing in warm and chills head-to-toe goosebumps
Off balance singing along to the song in my new pumps.

There's a well traveled "Broken Heart Lane"
On the outskirts of my hometown
People come from miles around
Sharing misery from love in vain
A honkytonk where sad songs flow
Underneath a flashing neon sign
Where libations and music combine
To be a pied piper for lonely souls
From the first time I walked in
Found an empty booth at the back
My love train had jumped the track
Those sad songs were not my friends
I'd sit by that whiskey river
That ran from the sea of love
They'd always give me a shove
When their message was delivered
It was called "The Cryin Clown
Performances were always live
You could slow dance with brokenhearted wives
Until the river pulled you down
One day I finally moved away
Broke loose from my pillory
That old clown would call to me
Every time those sad songs played
I may be love's circus clown
I know where I won't be found
In a river where whiskey drowns
Neath the sign of the Cryin Clown

Cool Nights Asparkin' Sally Ann
Hard days work completed , done my best
driving home on Saturday for a short rest
Later a quick shower and a bite to eat
off to town for a sweet and tender treat
No time now to spend money on my Sally Ann
Got myself a deliberate and fantastic saving plan
No time for the boys nor to drink down by the levee
Saving my greenbacks to buy that 57 Chevy
When that beautiful car belongs to me
Going to drive here bouts for all to see
Me and my gal riding in my bright blue car
to the drive in or my favorite honkytonk bar
If that doesn't give her a thrill
we'll go sparkin' again back of Judd hill
got a clever plan you should rightly know
complete with diamond rings to brightly show
Gonna' make that pretty gal my wife
settle down to a farmer's life
Children we will be a practicin' and growin'
Then the car won't be only thing I'll be proudly showin' .;) , Z.. -Tyr
