My Heart Is Poinsettia Red

My heart is poinsettia red,
You have filled it with Your own dear blood,
My love in return to all others spread,
None do You exclude, tho you could.

Our efforts to give wax so pitying,
Next to Your humble babe's crying,
Even so, tho some decry harried gift-giving,
It is in such giving we are living, nor dying.

Explosions of shiny foil red blue and green,
The most novel expressions Man's ever seen.
What's too much for me, if I am quieter,
Let everyone be, the gaudier the better!

Lights on trees, doorways and stores,
Echo that star that bids us yore.
Hail, hail, the bells, let red hearts sing out!
You live in us - there is no doubt!

And my heart is poinsettia red.

Weeki Wacky

Going on vacation
down to Spring Hill, Florida,
decided to take in some attractions,
and with Weeki "Wacky" practically
right up the road,
drove there to do some investigating,
hearing that they have live mermaids
is something I've never seen,
so took it upon myself to check it out,
because they say seeing is believing,
got there just in time to take
in the next mermaid show,
and as I counted them swimming
around they turned out to be four,
three of them looking like a young Ariel,
the fourth one I did a double take
because she looked so familiar,
she looked older and had flaming red hair
just like the others,
but her costume was like the color
hot pink and much more gaudier,
finally getting closer to the mermaid tank
I realized who it was and started to giggle,
because believe it or not,
and I guess she never retired her mermaid costume,
it was none other than Bette Midler!

An Alpine Adventure

This mountain of tall firs and pines
overlooks a placid valley with a hut,
meadows of wild flowers intrigue.
Hikers go upward meeting clouds,
their adventure is kind of unique.
Bell-shaped trumpet gentians spout--
rain on the pretty flowers of the Alps.

No mountain in this region is gaudier
than the unfolding new discoveries...
boulders and cliffs with sparkling dew.
Alpinists adore mounts that are greener,
they snap lots of pictures, not a few;
below, sheep graze in open grasslands--
they shiver when the breeze gets colder.

Away from sunless and urban settings,
one feels free doing the extraordinary;
breathing an air not spoiled by smog.
Alpinists have lived here for many ages,
tending their herds watched by a dog.
The blinding sunrise ascends gleefully--
joy overwhelms the heart that dreams.

Calm valleys with wooden huts, amid mounts,
are prone to avalanches with a rapid force;
violent storms can deform the luscious green.
Locals are afraid, they pray holding hands;
strong faith may avert what could have been.
It's twilight, flowers droop looking morose;
brightness fades--an evening of sad sounds.

J. Frank Dalton (1842-1951)

He rode a twisted trail,
He lied a tortured, fact-faked tale
Of Jesse James and unexpected shames
Of Quantrill’s carnage, powder-smoke and flames.

 He wasn’t who he said—
He wasn’t Jesse James, long dead
But something gaudier and grander yet
Imposter-champion none can forget.

He loved a lady,twice his age
In his heart a passion raged
He added her nam to his-
A young talent sadly cut short
Dying in WW1,as he so bravely fought
