The New Boy
David J Walker
The boys playing in the alley
Turned into a prehistoric combat team
As soon as they learned
That a New Kid was in town and
Had stepped on their turf
The Rock Fight was four on one
When it begun and could not
be avoided even though
Most rocks flew through the air
Hitting inanimate objects everywhere
untargeted
I drew the only blood spilt
In the killing zone when the lilt
in one little boy's voice cracked in pain
and went crying home with a
Bloodied Lower Lip
There was a truce for the night and the
Next day the leader of their gang fight
Became
My new best friend
When Dad heard
He just said
You could have put his eye out
You know
And that’s when the threat
of another rock fight
Came to an end
Until another new boy moved in

Don't remember my first breath
But surely will remember my last whatta mess
Maybe shot in a gang fight
Or by a jealous lover in spite
Or maybe shot by an opponent playing chess

it was at night
the street corner light
was on
and we got it on
it wasn't right
that was a
GANG FIGHT

Shots rang out into the night.
Another boy dies in a gang fight.
Why must me destory each other?
Why must we waste a life?
Screams echo off the allay's walls.
A man is stabbed with a sharp knife.
Robbed of his life and money, he falls.
No one hears his screams in the night.
In a dark room a child whimpers.
As the father beats the mother.
Wishing to hide even deeper,
under the warm covers.
When will this maddness end?
The killing, the hate, and all the sins.
In this blood bath no one can win.
Let the love in and the healing begin.
Why dose man have this need to kill?
Do they hunger for pain and blood?
Have all souls lost their heart and will,
for family and friends they can love?
