Reverence

Rosemary kept its fragrance longest where your sleeve had once bent through it; no gardener ever spoke of such small fidelities.
Root by root, I forgot the names of constellations until Orion became only the interval your breathing used to cross before sleep.
Resin closed around a fallen wing; amber finished the touch that time itself had left unfinished.
Ruin admitted one white hellebore between two loosened stones; no seed was seen to enter, yet every spring returned there first.
Rapture arrived without astonishment: the candle shortened, the chapel darkened, and still the perfume of warm wax continued kneeling in the air.
River water carried away our reflections at once, yet the reeds along the bank continued leaning toward the place where they had disappeared.
Rook after rook found separate branches; when the wind grew still, the leaves between them ceased to tremble first.

Before the First Name

Ere Dawn resumed her immemorial trust,
And vested earth with its hereditary fire,
A quiet ordinance, older far than light,
Passed through creation's unrecorded choir.
No seraph stirred.
No sceptre changed its hand.
Only possession loosed its last command.

The cedar kept its patriarchal shade;
The river held its testament to sea;
The stars maintained their sacerdotal watch,
Yet none rehearsed the grammar of the free.
Each thing fulfilled
Its undisputed part,
Without one covenant of "mine" at heart.

Then at the vesper table, long made holy
By homely fidelities no years could sever,
She brake the loaf, prepared the waiting bowl,
And reached to serve her absent love as ever.
Her hand grew still—
For love, at length made whole,
Could not distinguish giver from the bowl.

Then Light, divested of all need to shine,
Found every soul had always been its own.

Makita Xii: Loveless Death

Omnifarious cancers
Appear to elutriate the air
To the sharp turning leaves of parsimony
as fallacious acts brand us
and the flourishing hunger
betwixt our passionate fidelities
with loveless hues of death

Yesteryears

Sometimes when I sink in my thoughts
I see the enchanting face of gone by years
In the wide open window of my heart
With my eyes blurred with gushing tears

When I take out my old albums to dust
And aimlessly turn over its pages
My mind is swept with a wave’s thrust
Drifting to the time of saints and sages

The time of serenity, peace and love
The time that is frozen in my album
Like glittering gems in a treasure trough
Like a fragrant rose’s ravishing blossom

Men and women with hearts of gold
Love, loyalty and purity of soul
Times when fidelities weren’t bought and sold
Amity and friendship were cherished goal

The glorious past now nowhere in sight
Greed and lust in forefront of mind
Licentiousness and lewdness give no respite
Kindness and sympathy nowhere to find

The earth plagued with demons of ugliness
Leaches and vultures, oppressors and tyrants
Sucking the blood and devouring with greediness
The flesh of oppressed, the infirm and infants

It is time for tyranny’s elimination
The call of vision is for me and you
Be a sword to slaughter the demon
Life to be spared of affliction and woe
