lollygagging is something I intend to do more of
because I am older now
many would say OLD
I despise that word
I lollygag here there and everywhere
pausing in between lollygagging to watch tv,
play word games, and play with my two dogs
wait a second.
Isn’t that also lollygagging?
Loving my retirement moments
I tried to lollygag this morning
but I had a doctor’s appointment and an EKG
and no one let me lollygag for two and a half hours
This infuriated me

You'll hear no pop of a warmly burning fire,
as shadows grow and living things retire,
and the sun goes sinking low.
The deafening silence only proves
that anything that ever moved
is frozen in the snow.

Speculative, the owl of Minerva,
fires up the brain of childhood.
Word pictures of war and death,
love and nature...and God.
Psalm twenty-three, Trees,
O Captain My Captain, and
Richard Cory on the top tier.
I begin to express my inner world,
the preponderance of imagination
and emotion spill from my inkwell.
I script as death takes hold -
a precious pet, uncles,
grandparents.
Into the throes of poetry,
stimulated by an online class, reading
Poe and Plath - dark and yet
so stunning.
My virtual pen like an EKG -
once in a while flatlines,
but then my heart restarts.
I’m so in love…
with mine, with yours, with ours -
intertwined revelations of us.

So honored today
Selected by boss
Emergency room now
Co-worker inside
Have to miss big day at school
After my jobs were done
Glad to be chosen
She is a good friend of mine
Having EKG
Invited me back
I could see she was afraid
So glad we are friends
Tried to remain calm
Slurring her words in my truck
A possible stroke
I said I would come inside
No one else here, so I wait.

Baby Baba
Wake up to Baby Baba,
He said every morning.
More like a lion than a lamb.
I tumble out of bed.
Oatmeal on the stove,
Brown sugar surpasses oatmeal,
You don't mind.
Your heart so big,
Hands so strong.
Two jobs at times,
To give us what we need.
Hard work is what we learned.
Being a protective mom and daughter is what I am.
Your heart is so big,
Too big for your body.
Blood flowing too fast.
The doctor says surgery.
To give you more time,
For you, for me, for your family.
The waves come and go,
The sun rises and sets,
Everyone goes on with their lives.
My world has stopped.
To think of it without you.
The stars will be there every night.
Will you be looking at them too?
The heart in my chest,
Beats harder, stronger, faster.
To ease yours a bit.
Murmur, they say.
Cardiologist, he's called.
Echo, EKG, give it to me!
Just let me see my dad again!
You are important to us.
To teach us, to love us.
Say good night, Baby Baba.
But...
After surgery,
Say Good morning!

My heartbeat will never drop
Or completely flat line stop
You make it feel recharged
Beats were small but now are large
With sensations running through
It's alive when I'm with you
My EKG is just the proof
To show how much I care for you
Lines are happy when your near
And saddened when you disappear
I am hooked up very close
To your love and need a dose
Of it every day to live
Just send it through an IV drip
Right into my lonely heart
Where it can contract and start
To feel better and suspect
The faster you can inject
All the love from you to me
My sadness will be history
Your love will be just the cure
To keep me knowing for sure
The medicine you supply
From your lips and loving eyes
Will not put me on a stretcher
I'll be loving you forever

dadgum doctors, heads up their butts
poking, prodding, pricking skin
neurologist a psychopath
gets pleasure as electric volts pass through my body
family doctor showed little concern
made me paranoid about irregular heartbeat
EKG failed to determine cause
left me more in doubt than at ease
dentist like a character from Dustin Hoffman’s “Marathon Man”
the more pain inflicted
the more he rejoiced
deep root cleaning caused severe infection
bloodwork done by Vampira clones
labs filled with tubes and needles
results not shared with me
yet I footed the bill
optometrist an Oriental who moved so fast
didn’t care if the prescribed glasses worked
boo on you, dang aristocrats
waving your credentials
nurses so slow to respond
MRI promised on CD, but couldn’t be obtained
just like the blood tests, needed a “report”
doctors driving me insane
each should share my mental hospital bills

Nestled in his recliner,
His body oozes into the grooves,
Filling up every nook, every cranny
Until a synergistic union of man and
La-Z-Boy is achieved.
His eyes are unreceptive, half closed watching his
High definition plasma widescreen;
Yet they remain constant on the TV,
Like a doctor staring at an EKG
Aware for changes or blips.
The right hand’s on top the clicker,
Burning off his body’s reserve
From the Hungry Man breakfast, lunch, and dinners.
Content to recline his life away,
The Sloth stays planted to his domain,
And camouflages with his environment
As the cheetos stains slowly cover his frame.
