He zings through tall grasses and lands on my knee
I try my best to pull this sticky legged insect off me
He chortles and chuckles and pings off in the wind.
This hopper of grasses surely has annoyed and sinned.
Another one of these pests zings onto my shirt.
Giving me the willies, I scream at my cousin Bert
Get the lightening bug jar, let’s catch this foul creature
This grasshopper gives me a wink; he’s the double feature
Why are they so sticky? They are as tricky as glue.
And why, Bert, do these creepers never land on old you?
I guess I’m not as sweet, he says, with a wide smile.
Another one lands on me, says “Hi! Just call me Lyle!”

My memory’s worth cannot be measured,
sometimes it brings with it some regret.
Some I have filed and they are now treasured,
the unpleasant one’s I’ve endeavored to forget.
But from unpleasant things I can also fain,
and experience has been my classroom teacher.
So that I always know what not to do again,
the same mistake would be a double feature.
No heart holds any secrets,
because our tongues can’t keep one.

Have you ever met a creature of the swamp
the kind that makes his home in the DC bureaucracy
I hear there are hundreds of thousands of them
I shop at Macy's, so why haven't I met one
Perhaps I should visit them at home, I've thought
but getting soaking wet, I'd have to remove my ascot
(Perish the thought!)
O, what's the use? I just can't find this alleged 'swamp creature'
I'm off to see 'Alligators & Crocodiles' at the Bijoux ~ today's double feature

Beautiful floppy hat with a kaleidoscopic design,
You show up in the courtyard as I taste my wine.
Your wearer caught my eyes, she is such a beauty.
I wish I was not leaving tomorrow, but it is my duty.
I signed up for the navy before I met this lovely creature.
Recruiters got me hard and good, showing me a double feature.
I want to get her number, but kismet will have to be ready.
Right now, I am a seaman, shipping off, a guy named Freddy.
I take one last look at the beauty under the hat.
Is that my sister next to her? What do you think of that?
Kismet has a plan. I run over to say “hi”.
“This is my brother Fred, Sue said. “he is a great guy.”

Who made red panda Robin Hood? My cousin asked.
No idea, but go along with it if you can, I replied.
His hat is feathered, and he is amply flasked.
And he is walking the path, now coming inside.
Hello fair Robin Hood, my cousin said quickly.
His words turned upbeat lickety-split-ly.
I laughed at my cousin, who is afraid of this creature.
But invites him to stay over to watch a double feature.
Why did you do that? I whisper as Robin robs us.
It is irritating to me, as he steals my parakeet, Gus.
I was terrified, my cousin says, I did not know what to say.
That is no big deal for my cousin, actually, a typical day.

I just saw a little beast outside!
I think he has scurried off to hide!
Is he a little chubby with a pretty face?
That’s Rhubarb my hedgehog, he has such grace.
You mean you are feeding this rodent creature?
I surely am, he is like watching a double feature.
He’s funny and sassy and he scurries with attitude.
I love everything about him. He is polite, never rude.
He washes his food first in that little bowl of water.
We all adore Rhubarb - my husband, son and daughter.
Please do not scare him, it has taken him a long time.
To get used to humans, and now I claim him as mine.
You really are an animal love the persnickety visitor said.
I think you are odd, I would enjoy seeing inside your head.

At times He shouts to clear his throat, AHEM!
We are the phlegm.
Puffs of dandelion dust,
ignoring life, allowing hearts to rust.
Each day we rush upon ourselves,
shelving more decisions,
piercings and incisions,
in the side of eyelids, nose, and tongue.
unknowing victims, of
what we know not from.
beaming like returning martyrs,
blown to Kingdom Come.
matter splattered, gut ache or remorse;
no age is better for it; no age worse.
it’s what we choose to look at now;
it is our Holy Cow.
maybe sin is in the looking,
maybe in the not,
eyes averted;
disaster flirted with,
Mr./ Mrs. Smith,
composite couple;
doubling our efforts
to keep up, win the cup;
get the bowl;
satisfy a never-filling hole.
Our procedure is to marry;
double-feature of our troubled futures;
sutures for the wounds inflicted
in a psyche so conflicted;
we sit for hours and hours
hours and hours, paying folks
to analyze the guiltiness of flowers.
We simply grow, didn’t you know;
afraid of what we have created.
Frankensteins,
so overrated, - tall,
but not so unrelated after all.

A duck-billed platypus
Is bathing on the bus
She left her favorite stream
To join our swimming team
She did so well last year
Her lane was free and clear
Until the final leg
When Platy laid an egg
The hippopotami
Don’t eat the platy pie
Because the hippo bake
Is better served with cake
The platy pie who pluck
Are eating Peking duck
Because the ducks that pry
Are dinner by and by
I knew a platypus
Who shared her duck with us
My dinner pals were thrilled
Because the duck was billed
O what a cunning creature
To don a double feature
The mammal with a plus
A duck-billed platypus.

Answering The Time Machine

It has its own peculiar ring
Something like a summers day
Something like a mountain stream
Something like a lilac bush
Something like a quiet field
Something like a firefly
Something like a crying child
Something like a shooting star
Something like a passing train
Something like a lifeguards whistle
Something like your mother’s voice
Something like a double feature
Something like a kiss good night
Something like a summer sunset
Something like that last time
that anything
Felt real

Mars is such a long way off
Flying there could be quite tough
Let's set up intermediate stations
On each one take long vacations
If we ever get to Mars, then good
And if not ~ Well, that's Hollywood!

Say Dog See Dog
By David J Walker
How much easier it would be
If dreams came with closed captioning
And a laugh-track
and perhaps Applause
at appropriate intervals
A deep-voiced narrator
and serious music
Could help explain each frame in
Historic context
of tonight’s documentary
And if the editor could include
soft dissolves Between transition in scenes
I could better Resolve discrepancies
in timelines
Say Dog
See Dog
Comes to mind
if I were writing the script
For this double feature
And by the way
Black & White is dramatic
But I would shoot in color

Double Feature
David J Walker
Every today
And
Every tonight
10,000 ways to
To capture each in
High gloss
Black & White
All in sequenced order
When touched turned into a
Moving motion picture
Framed in Technicolor
While I take my seat
At the border
Repeating the lines
That were mine
Now printed and cut
The best left on the
Editors floor
And still,
I come back for more
Another double feature
With my name framed
In the lights of the Marque

The Runaway
out in the street
was sick of it all
packed my bags and left
the people were very cold
had to sleep in the shelter
grabage everywhere near cot
the smell of urine in the night
tossing and turning was there something I forgot
smoked a little weed I had in my pocket
nothing could numb the pain from humanities insanity
during the day I would go to the soup kitchen
never could make my belly full always growling
had enough of the shelter was fed up
so I then discovered the tent city
stole a tent from the salvation army
life was still so very shitty
would go fishing down by the creak
fish were scarce cause many bums would take a leak
but I choose to go it alone
wherever I lay my head was my home
until the day I met with a local preacher
noticing my life was being lived as a late night double feature
with head bowed down I chose to give my life to the Lord
promising to live on his every word
as I look back now those many years ago
I'm very thankful that I was willing to change my road.

she whispered in his ear
Torn
hands, eyes & heart
at first he plunged into her like an ox
caught up in the charm of the moment
in a blink of an eye it was over
under the covers
she treasured a red rose that was plucked a time before
the twilight sun has tainted her inner vision
felt a funeral in the brain let me explain
two lovers embarked on a cosmic scene
living in a land that is so very mean
a moment of pleasure now with a lifetime of regret
for I'm so very sorry that we had met
as a cold clap in the dark
she lit the spark to what I needed to know
faint hearted creatures in a double feature
the logical choice would have been to abstain
something's not quite right in the brain
just not having her in my arms now is driving me insane
