Our land of stars and stripes, now glows,
with screens that flicker in hallowed halls.
Entranced humans shuffle, with eyes fixed below,
on small gadgets that have us enthralled.
Should the Statue of Liberty, our symbolic girl,
be holding a smartphone up to the world?
While tweets fly like eagles and hashtags swirl,
foreign disinformation trends as fast as it’s purled.
In lunch halls, real conversations take rest,
as influence is sought—in hoity-toity, binary quest.
Friends are backdrops—originality in short supply
as likes and shares make our dopamine fly.
America’s zombies, though *********** drained,
shuffle endlessly on, with Wi-Fi stimulated brains.
Once the land of the free, we’re now the land of tech
with minds wrecked by truths unchecked.
As we rock and sway—the new robot way—
will our old, analog-republic simply fade away?

Screen of Awareness
Look up!
From tedium uncertainty -
Focus on an impartial pure lens -
Blank screen of nothing shows pulses of the soul,-
Flashing test patterns of unbiased ambivalence
And the veracity of a changing diorama.
Pause
Before the imagery in reflections
Of history’s emotionless mistress
Moments hidden
Held captive in blinking time windows -
Independent sentinel of a detached empirical.
Open
To the neutral sentience
Of a silent silvered screen
Devoid of snarled motion pictures,
Curved dolby lacking judgements,
Conscious docudrama premiered on perpetual loops!
Witness honesty
Shadowing boxing with equivocal revelation
Heartbeats captured in subjectivity’s vertigo
See screen tests of impartiality,
In amber awareness like clanging signals
For a slow train of approaching objectivity.

Long years back writing just was a job,
To my boss— a bugbear, my pet lob,
It then turned to hobby—
To numb noise my Dolby,
My life’s passion by now consigned FOB
Of an unpaid cabby,
A do-not-so hubby,
A horse in harness, show-off doorknob.

I am a silent movie,
a corny melodrama
played in black and white
with an observable flicker.
A little tramp
accompanied by ragtime piano.
You are pure A-list
Technicolor,
Dolby digital
THX, IMAX laser,
Oscar winner
3D blockbuster.
And yet you love
me.

Oh how I wish they would be patient with me,
I need to be upgraded can’t they see.
Maybe a new motherboard and processor is what I need,
since everyone is interested in core clock speed.
Possibly a high definition video card would do,
with 3D quality to improve the view.
What about that 24-bit Dolby digital sound card,
clear enough to hear out in the yard.
Can’t forget to add a new memory stick,
at least 512 megabytes is what I would pick.
It must have a Double Data Rate,
and a Dual In-Line Memory Module to be great.
We might end up needing more hard drive space,
so put in a 120 Gig drive in the old ones place.
With all these changes you’re about to make,
there is one precaution you should take.
Staying away from the static could be a perk,
if in the end you want me to work.
Then when I am up and ready to go,
there is one thing you should know.
Avoid opening e-mail messages from an unknown source,
installing a good virus program would help of course.
The only problem is that he never has any money you see,
so I simply wish he would take care of me.
