What are you doing? I asked the little girl of three.
I am colorizing the flowers, she promptly told me.
And staying in the lines I said, immediately amazed!
Watching her paint posies yellow where cows grazed.
You can paint the red ones, she said, knowing me.
I was as tickled and thrilled as any grandma could be.
I sat right down and picked up a paint brush too.
But I wanted a different color, so I chose blue.
Those are for the birds! My granddaughter said.
Blue flowers are rare, because she has an artistic head.
I begged her, just for today can we have just a few ….
Flowers in the meadow that are a brilliant blue?

ILLUMINATION
a school-ager swings
PAST the emerald trees
to crystalline stars
she aims high
with outstretched legs
heart pounding
she jumps landing
soundly on sensible feet
in the PRESENT
wise with solid roots
climbs the tree of logic
bumbling into the FUTURE
a scholar’s taken a beating
the ultramarine sky calls
she covers herself in yarn
colorizing stars with needles

Every Niche of My Heart
The sun sinks behind.
And lingers for a moment
Colorizing skies.
Western Mountain Range
Made majestic by the light
Minimizes night.
Where, beyond the plains,
The bleak dark mountain peaks watch
Oh, friendless life.
And a fallen limb
Lies upon the solid ground
Lonely, filled with fright.
Resting on the rim
Not another soul around
Coldness brings its blight.
Then, the thought of you
Fills every niche of my heart.
And my soul takes flight.
