It lies with it's kin in the bag they live in, collectively known as a 'float',
not quite sure why that's so but there's one thing I know
and that's they've never been near a boat.
They hustle and clatter , skins not coated in batter, in different hues, green, yellow, red,
there's a blue one, poor thing with a twisted wire spring
that's unused, I assume that he's dead.
From a hook under the stairs they will come out in pairs
although sometimes they will hunt in threes
when bedsheets they attack, or their jaws may just crack
as it fights them all off in the breeze.
If encountering a red one, for sure, you're a dead one,
it nips at your fingers and toes,
and when the timing is right it's a horrible sight on the tip of a young child's nose.
I can honestly state that they sometimes migrate
not a lot, since they always get caught,
but please take it from me, that I can guarantee on washdays you are always one short.

I remember the day I picked you,
With your sweet little puppy dog eyes.
For my heart was searching for love too,
When I looked down and heard your soft cries.
Your brothers and sisters were running,
They were after a fallen clothes peg,
But there was a puppy so stunning
Trying hard to get up on my leg.
Four years it has been since that moment
And I thank God daily for his gift
Each day you give me such enjoyment
Your love has given my heart a lift.
Today I know as clear as can be,
I didn’t pick you; rather you picked me.

I photograph the violence but am not part of it:
Machine guns point like the cypress trees.
They drop for a moment ready to erect,
at the charge of desire
they burst into fire.
I photograph not only the cruelty but the sorrow,
the silent anguish of the lost and displaced.
A secure world has been upturned.
In bewildered eyes
I see my childhood and surmise.
I photograph the young body ravished with gunshot,
the strong man dismembered
the tough flesh-torn women.
For some, blood is a sexual wound,
a cut of desire
in the gun fire.
I photograph the clothes-peg mission camp,
flat like match sticks on the floor
or a shattered crater on the moon
with ribbon rags
stuck on the crags.
I photograph from my pinnacle of survival and pain,
flickering sparks for casual glances.
Only a few understand there is ecstasy
torn apart but tied
the man alive to they who died.
