Grass-eating animals are their favorite food
Lions don’t eat carnivores, they are not in the mood
When they devour the tasty stomach of their prey
They can stay healthy one more day

Predatory lions,
Prowl through the savanna,
Patiently hunting prey.
Powerful carnivores,
Pursuing their quarry.
Pandemoniums cull
Plays out, until they kill.

I have to admit your planet is chill, I said.
Possibly the most placid in the universe.
How do you know? The alien asked. And what is that?
I guessed sky, clouds, trees, bird.
No, I know those things he said. What is THAT?
I did not get it for a while, for I saw nothing else.
Which shows that I have lost my appreciation for beauty.
It was the sunset!
I felt my brains were not on fire today,
Kind of lukewarm, a spike above genocide.
The alien touched my elbow with his violet fingers
I looked down, surprised at his light touch.
I thought you would be ferocious, I told him.
He threw back his ebony eyes and chuckled.
I thought you would be carnivores, he told me.
That is when I knew not to offer him meat for breakfast.
Let’s hurry inside and have some eggs I suggested.
My roommate was putting a platter on the table.
It had bacon, eggs, pancakes and sausage.
My new friend took a bite of sausage.
Wow! He said. What is this?
It is a cookie, I quickly replied.

If you want to be omnivores,
Raise your hands.
Compliant lions raised
their giant paws
not understanding why the men were
sitting on their hands.

nature's carnivores
sometimes let their prey find them-
like venus flytraps.

The Carnivores Next Door
rate the worth and pleasure
of their morning
by the number of shattered lives
they return home dragging
at times there’s broad smiles
and load boasting
gathered friends
who lend to the barbarism
their congenial
conspiratorial toasting
revelling in the blood and sinews
of the fallen
avoiding non-biodegradable packing
and energy absorbing refrigeration
artificial colours
and chemical preservation
the carnivores next door
eating their conservation
