A Summers Idyl
warm summer’s day at the lake
inviting my wife and I to sit and enjoy
the water is a cool aqua blue
rich color of relaxation
slight breeze touches the surface
barely a ripple disturbs the scene
the green rowboat rocks at anchor
hoping we will avail ourselves of a ride
my wife dressed in her white chiffon dress
idly sits on the cool concrete steps
her broad brimmed hat perched on her blonde hair
to keep the yellow rays of the sun from her head
at the top of the steps, I have the best view
I can drink fully of the summer scene
Quiet murmuring conversations that languish in the ears like mantras softly
chanted.
Hands held in brittle motion,
Gently touching fragile cup handles.
Shoulders held erect and back to give the spinal cord a shape.
Decorated in lace and gauze,
Shawdowed with broad brimmed spring hats.
It isn't the conversation, companionship, or the location that stirs the rush to
participate.
It is the setting of the scene, and the acting out of a prearranged part in lifes
little organizations that call to some souls.
Fancies
Hats worn sidesaddle sporting feathers, cornflowers
Whimsy rides in sequins, ribbons and plumes
Small or broad brimmed, laces form floating towers
Swooping pillboxes off to the races clad in blooms
Dedicated to the fanciful hats called Fancies worn at the Kentucky Derby and Royal Ascot Races.

My fashion sense, to be quite kind
Is sometimes difficult to find
But I do still hope for a compliment
From a well-dressed, handsome, discerning gent.
On my morning walk one summer day
I was feeling low I have to say
Broad-brimmed hat a little quaint
Fashion plate it certainly ain't
I passed a buff and muscled chap
In standard backward baseball cap
He looked at me and took me in,
Gave a big encouraging grin
Called out loud "I like your hat"
Just like that!
I broke out in a huge, huge smile
And cheerfully walked an extra mile.
glorious day calls
donning summer's broad-brimmed hat
