Heated by sun and rock
a mottled snake licks the morning air.
Last night, stones were its eyes,
a blood-chill had frozen the flavor
and flicker
of tongue and taste.
The daylight is already sun-crushed,
heavily it crumbles,
dry churning a scant green
to withered acres,
grinding all beneath its hermetic heel.
A rabbit runs a racetrack behind its eyes,
long whiskers sightlessly search
reaching far from their hidden hollow,
its brown pelt dreamily brushes over
a rounding horizon.
Snake uncoils, breaking boulders of blood
between warming bones.
A cage of hoops unlocks a hunger.
A blushed mouth is snugged around
translucent fangs,
bodkins that smell out
all small-pawed scrabbling’s.
Rabit ears twitch as eyes leap awake,
it hears the serpents lithe unhinging,
senses its scaled unclasping.
An immediate pulse quickens,
vibrant tendons of awareness
animate joy and fear.
On the quiet breath,
visions of life or death arise
as speculative ghosts.
Now the sky must record
while the earth forgets.

A deceiving tomcat howl.
We are scolded,?
poked with cattle-prods of sound.?
Phonetic bodkins bedevil,?
nails our ears to a demented aria.?
?
Bird of a thousand jeers,?
improbable impressionist?
voicing out a shout to clout our minds?
or mimicking the ominous threat?
of rattling snakes,?
then rejoicing at our fright.?
?
Madcap mimicker, ?
maniacal jester, your palaver rib digs?
all things sacrosanct and unholy.?
?
Prank on you mischievous singer,?
reprise again your raucous repertoire?
only elsewhere, anywhere else?
but here!

We cowboys on this side of the pond
Get out of bed with boots and spurs on
To ride our bucking bronco golden stallions
As you mount your nags on the weak side of the ocean
Yes, we snicker as you call elevators 'lifts'
And your truckers call a semi a 'lorry'
But daring to call a cop or a smokey a 'bobby' ~
Odds bodkins, bloke! Please say that you're sorry!

like twins they indeed do become
warm, sleepy, peaceful bodkins

Ods bodkins, fellow slobkins
Let's go find Anthony Hopkins,
Who's recuperating from a case
of the dreaded dropkins,
And is now meeting secretly
with Cy Kotikins.

Eureka! I think I have found the meaning!
Thank God! Because it's so late in the evening
Criminy! I just forgot what I was thinking
Odds and Bodkins! If I only had an inkling
Holy Cow! What an awesome revelation!
After so much prayer and supplication
Jumping Jehoshaphat! It's gone again
I was almost enlightened; about to transcend
Damn this transitory satori, damn this fleeting glance
Arms akimbo while I stand in reverie and trance
I can't grasp it long enough for it to take hold
Manifold instances and myriad thresholds
Gazing into the ether and staring into quintessence
The Prototype welcomes me into The Presence
There is a radiance I can't see the start or the end of
The only thing said to me was a transmogrifying "Love."
