Lifts and Lorries

We cowboys on this side of the pond Get out of bed with boots and spurs on To ride our bucking bronco golden stallions As you mount your nags on the weak side of the ocean Yes, we snicker as you call elevators 'lifts' And your truckers call a semi a 'lorry' But daring to call a cop or a smokey a 'bobby' ~ Odds bodkins, bloke! Please say that you're sorry!

Touché! My Transatlantic friend. I have also addressed this issue in my poem: ‘Inter-nation pronunciation’. By the way, the term: ‘lorry’ would translate as: ‘truck’, while a ‘semi’: we call an ‘artic’ (short for articulated lorry). Capisch? Vive la difference!

Wow. An 'articulated lorry.' Whoa! No wonder they call it the 'King's English.' (Truth be told, Americans murder the language. Had we not won the war in 1783, 'Americanese' would 'no doubt' be banned everywhere.) Thanks for the education. ~ From Afar, gw

The trunk on a car is a "boot" and the hood is a "bonnet", so with their huge phallic hats, a "bobby" is a sonnet?
