Wiktionary says: A corruption of "God's bodkins", referring to the nails used in the crucifixion. Bodkins can be defined as a small pointed instrument used to pierce cloth or leather...just call me smarty pants.

I hadn't heard those words, Gershon. I think we came up with our own strange phrases, like "gee whillikers." I enjoyed your poem. :)

I always learn something when I read your work…….Shakespeare also got away with using this phrase. Makes me think donkeys are sounding outrage from their use as a beast of burden for millennia. Just food for thought. Thanks GW
