Black Ice Snake

The morning was painted with a frigid brush
The car gargled up a February moon
I had the early A.M road all to myself
almost
A death wish was gaining ground in large chunks
together we entered the throat of the black ice snake
after a few side-by-side terrorized seconds
the red eyes disappeared over an asphalt bluff. 
I looked for death

unseen until its too late

It gets into all the machines
and freezes up the works,
it coats the sidewalks and front steps,
and slipping on it hurts.
It sheens the railing so that when
you grab them gloves get wet,
it lays on branches so they break,
the living and the dead.
But worst of all, it coats the roads
in glass you cannot see,
you only know when

I am heaven and I am not welcome here now
and I know it will take some time until I am again
i'm unsure if my gates will ever open wide enough for you to slip through
though you can stare at them
locked
for as long as you please

even though it makes my mouth dry and my blood rush

Slippery steps through troublesome thoughts
Always trying not to fall
Desperate for words to release emotions
That felt too cold to process
Where are the answers when needed?
Life brings so many losses
Including failures I must learn to accept
When the black ice cracked

The ice changes everything. I did not see it, but wow, did I feel it as I slipped on it, losing my balance twice.  I caught myself both times.  Excited that I did not fall.  Oops. Another patch. I almost go down. But aha! Ice zero. Me three.  Tricky ice. Always

Northern vagabond 
winter is coming to peck you apart
it has a black ice heart
as it kisses your blue lips
the blood will leave the limbs
to protect the soul of the heart.
but city people won't bring you in.
They've just clawed from under- a summer of blood
their conditioned not to trust your skin color.

Country folk are no better

Black Ice Pie and Chalk

Winter fairies tunnel deep in snowbanks
pop up here and there- unleashing a prank
they're fond of black ice pie
canning fruit and fireflies
above each of their doors hangs a snowflake.

Come spring they have to be on the caution
when the skyline pocks with blackbird and hawk
if they let their shields rest
bones will line every nest 
and their souls

BLACK ICE 

Some say the world will end in ice, 
a pitch black universe in sacrifice.  
Earth is swallowed by the sun, 
from Earth’s horizon, galaxies run. 

Nebulas lose fuel that star their souls, 
galaxies are eaten by black holes. 
Stars blink out with no new fuels,
and protons decay by nature’s rule.
