Best Woodpecker Poems
camouflaged body of singular bird,
on late Winter oak’s
white, gray and brown bark,
would assimilate feathers,
except for a blooming red head
that rises from the hollow’s depth

Bite Size Poem no.39

The ladder backed pecker,
like a prison uniform.
Caught-up in exposing
the truth beneath the bark,
of the poet's apple tree.
We prefer ourself in spring;
with tiny little flowers,
and the fruit of possibility.
Yet, if not for the woodpecker,
tapping holes into poems,
we might not ever see
the flesh and blood of raw meat.
I will climb that ladder back,
escape pre-decreed standards.
Tap into that syrupy mixture
and suck-out truth from hard wood.
Yes, lessons from a jail bird.
A pest in the Avian Kingdom.
Wisdom from the little rebel,
beat-out of a tree.
**
It was a lovely spring day.
The sun greeted me with a smile.
I heard the sound of rat-a-tat-tat.
Sounds coming from the roof.
I gazed out the large window.
There sat a red-bellied woodpecker.
Dressed for destruction in his red hard hat.
Sporting a checkered black and white overcoat.
This crazed little bird,
sat on a metal vent pipe.
He looked at me and winked.
He proceeds to drill.
He stopped, rather dumfounded.
He shook his head, looking confused and dazed.
He danced to the right side.
Like a mad man, he continued his craze.
I watched this bird for hours.
determined not to give up on his quest.
Finally, the woodpecker flew off, comely retreating.
He lands on an oak tree in final defeat.

I keep pecking at the tree of life
Only finding the bugs of strife.
No nourishment for my aching heart
No detailed map or starry chart.
Pieces of bark I chip away
Searching for the essence of yesterday.
Rings of wisdom in the tree
My eyes too blind to clearly see.
The autumn of my life is here
For spring and summer I shed a tear.
For if I knew what I know now
Would have done it different somehow.
Yet different choices would have led
To different sets of regret.
Better to stop pecking at the tree
Maybe it made, for a better me.
* This is the continued story from my Haiku ...Where is my food? About Woody the Woodpecker.
So, hungry Woody the woodpecker was yelling at the empty feeder for food:
Clearly that day, he was not in the greatest mood!
I was held up with a health issue, so a friend went to buy the suet block
I am not sure what happened, but he picked a box of many in stock!
Then, the cashier couldn't ring up the bar code, you see...
And imagine this...gave this long box to my friend for free!
I was surprised I ended up with a box of 12 suet blocks inside!
So no worries now, Woody has plenty of food to replace outside!
He talks a little different tune, when he arrives with food there too
- I take that as a happy Thank You -

Elmo Hit Woody Woodpecker
Woody Woodpecker was going too fast he hit dust
When Elmo ran right after him in earnest eager must
Oh my, oh my, that was a real wild hit and bad image
Too bad for Woody Woodpecker looked like a squashed spinach.

Woody Wood-Pecker
Does anybody remember the cartoon Wood Wood-Pecker?
Always used to laugh, do, play and sing to say so what the hecker
The show sure did last
He surely did fast
And did you know he’d really never and pick at your pecker.

There was a woodpecker whacking,
Continuous sound nerve-racking.
Distressed in the mind,
Making my teeth grind,
Tap-tapping will send me packing.
Standing outside, I clapped my hands,
Sending him off to no-man's land.
But no, he just sat,
And started to tap.
His tapping, how will I withstand?

A woodpecker pecks
The sound resonates around
Aluminum pole
Fiercely crows disturbed roosters
All sound waves combine
woodpecker
knocks in the bare forest
shutters slam
A cute woodpecker
Is hammering with its beak
A coconut tree.
The Giant Spruce tree
Has a Woodpecker doctor
Tapping the bugs out

Woodpecker, woodpecker
Pecking on the wood
Woodpecker, woodpecker
Live a life that’s good
Peck away, peck all day
Always peck that wood
Peck away, peck every day
Live the life that’s good
Woodpecker, woodpecker
Pecking on the tree
Woodpecker, woodpecker
Live a life that’s free
Peck away, peck all day
Always peck that tree
Peck away, woodpecker. Please,
Peck for you and me
The woodpecker knocks
on the warped and latched pine door
it ignores the snores
Woodpecker pecking
Pecking at the sued block
making tapping noise
