All year long he puts my heart on a shelf
No surprise I’d rather be by myself
     If there’s no Valentine treat
     From this worthless hunk of meat
He can go on making love to himself

Remember there’s an “I” in Valentine
So if no one’s around to say, “Be mine”
     Just splurge – get a new hairdo
     Party with an all-girl crew
Check out the divorce rate and say, “I’m fine”

Premium Member A Springtime Song

Mother nature’s songs I cannot exceed
Of the Whippoorwill out in open field
They partake of mother’s bliss free of greed
Birds and their songs give of mother’s free will

Meadowlark songs of many are preferred
Though Scissortail flycatchers slice thin air
I favor Mocking bird of which I’ve heard
He sings all bird songs, I desire to sire

Mocking bird songs do surge with bird’s great urge
Whip-her-Will, he sings at night on the hill
Of Mocking bird songs , be of which I splurge
Awesome flight as dotted blades of windmill

Nature, birds and songs to springtime belongs
Nature’s spring refreshes men with bird songs

A single red, heart-shaped balloon isn’t enough
So I splurge and buy fourteen adorned by cupid
I tie them to the chair of my beloved “Hot Stuff”
To think mere balloons might please him would be stupid

So I search and search for the grandest tea roses
His favorite warm colors are all blended in each
His desk they decorate in striking poses
Hope these will do the trick and his passion beseech

But then I remember his strong chocolate craving
Godiva treats I purchase and spare no expense
Set beside roses, surely he’ll be raving
He’ll be home in an hour; I can’t bear the suspense

When the door opens, I am wearing a teddy
The Valentine card he takes with a gloomy look
When he sees his desk, he wails, “Enough already!”
And he doesn’t even try my straps to unhook

How puzzled I feel when he says, “We have to talk”
No, he hadn’t forgotten this lovers’ holiday
Into his small closet he suggests we should walk
He seems so depressed; I’d expected a hooray

Piled high in the closet are all occasion gifts
Gaudy Christmas sweaters and tons of chocolate hearts
He can’t find his clothes and between us grows a rift
To sort through this maze, he would need a detailed chart

“Take all this stuff with you and please just leave my home
In fact, I’ll pay your expenses to relocate
And be sure to take that hideous garden gnome
Make it snappy, will you? I have a date at eight!”

The Party

The host was the most, an elegant man,
Who throws great parties like no one else can.
All were dressed to the nines for a special affair,
While men peeked at bosoms and tried not to stare.

The gathering together of local folks,
Were sitting and telling some witty jokes;
While ladies who came dressed in the latest style,
Vied with each other for a gentleman’s smile.

Candles were lit, the music played low,
The table was set in perfection’s glow;
With goblets of wine and bone china plates,
That defined the mind with earnest debates.

The fragrance of food that smelled so fine,
Was delivered with bottles of sweet scented wine;
And great steaming bowls of chicken soup,
Were served in style with a sterling silver scoop.

Roast beef with gravy was served with care,
With mashed potatoes and all the fanfare.
There were squash, carrots and dishes of beans,
And bowls of crisp chopped salad greens.

There was wine to sip and coffee to drink,
There was so much to eat, no one could think;
There was cake to splurge and gin to purge,
And all who ate quickly lost the urge.

The hours ticked by with buttons undone,
That belied the gourmet from having fun;
 For lessons they learned were simple and few,
A waist filled with haste is hard to undo.

Arcturus Treasure

ARCTURUS TREASURE

Just standing in the handle of the dipper.
Drinking stars from inside her silver slipper.
The cup is buoyed up in ancient liquid light.
And Ursula tags a string upon her kindly kite.

Arcturus has flung the dipper far and high.
It rides the flow and surfs the starry sky.
The giant orange that spies the buxom bear.
Our secrets safe and kept as treasure there.

Upright to Milky Way it rips the canopy to scars.
And quickly moves against a slice of slippery stars.
Red glint that is polar to the stoic starry stream.
A visitor that flies within a deft diminutive dream.

Then in a blink or in a million years from now.
The red rust will break from our starry burnished bough.
A star no longer seen to ride a season by Ursula's urge.
Nor extend its dipper's handle in a splendid splurge.

A giant red that wore the bootes of heardsman all it's life.
And followed close to make the North Star a wondrous wife.
No Icarus to fly and melt in drawing hot while narrowing near
It's but a dying star yet keeps melodic magic sung in echoes ear.

Premium Member Morning In Glorious Emergence

I manage my planned early rise in hopes dawn will kindly provide me
time before others converge in the joy bounce of family noise.
With silent glee for this vacation cabin, well worth our money splurge,
I tiptoe out to the porch.

Fresh, early morning beauty twinkle-dance performs upon the lake’s
sleepy surface and the sight sigh-settles bliss among my accrued
anxiety bits. Nature’s most enchanting chords sound-lift my awe
with full force as truth re-surges within my soul.

Morning in glorious emergence nurses me with a wordless,
restoring sermon felt purge. I watch life at the nearby pond
where birds group-peek for worms while three unconcerned swans
mellow glide behind the fronds.

Glad am I for nature’s catharsis to all in me the city daily twists.
I am so porch and nature settled, I nearly miss the eager kettle hiss
warning that family is in my midst and hungry for their morning grits.

Premium Member What Poetry Is

When letters wait to pounce on a blank page,
when thoughts crowd the mind like frothing scum in a pond
I keep wondering what poetry is to me and to many

Is it not the language of the heart
with no intervention of gray matter
the unlocking of closed vaults
stirring the embers of love, hurt or pain
or giving a free rein to fancy and flying
on magic carpets to lands forlorn

Sometimes it is a glide into a sea of tranquillity
an escape from the humdrum of the world
a flash of liberation from assaults of pain
a sedative to numb the turmoil
a sanctuary for a burdened heart
a window to look at the world through
a companion when one is inconsolably alone
a candle flame in a darkening world
a cloth line to hang the dirty laundry
a water lily blooming in the pool of tears
a shelter in homelessness

sometimes it is a ladder to climb up to Heavens
an angel on wings with tidings of hope
peace in a world braced for war

Poetry, if you are all these let us fall at your feet
bless us in our art, may we splurge in fancy
and conjure up worlds from words!

Our poems may not be light houses
but could be fireflies on a starless night!

Premium Member Rainbows Here

Good earth styles
Fine ample grass;
A fine raiment

Sun and rain speak
Splurge fond refrain;
Rainbows echo

Dawn flings
Shadows drowned;
Awake to birdsong

Man-made park
Forest architecture;
In the city

Journey here
Begin within;
Greet the sea shore

Waves splashing
Jetty promenade;
Fishing trip moments

Offshore boat ride
Temple pilgrimage;
Kusu Island awaits

By temple hall
Ancestral tablets;
Silence mitigates

Sunday church service
Congregation sings;
Amen to that

Buddhist mantra
Chanting meditation;
Mindfully aware

God's children come
Kingdom awaits;
Barter for bread

Hindu yogi
Beyond samsara;
Lotus posture

Muslim Renaissance
Faith revival;
Touch of grace

Sufi thinker
Austere profoundness;
Lessons to learn

Taoist philosophy
Yin-Yang address;
Harmony presides

Christian theology
Heaven and Hell;
Symbols and signs

Jewish piety
Despite persecution;
People of God

God wears
Many hats;
Each a religion

Wise men tell
From all faiths:
God is Love

Men of Science
Men of God;
Bridge the gap

Go beyond faith
Rest in stillness;
Walk the middle way

God's children
Need love and light;
Stern compassion works

A wise man said:
Live and let live;
Do not shed blood

Keep your faith,
Love all colours;
See human rainbows

A Price Tag On Every Soul

Everybody bears a price tag
Claim tycoons with bottomless purses
With a plethora of dollars to flash and flag
About to entice simpletons who deem their lives struck by curses

Inserted in their DNA
Generations ago
Which render them incapable to shove away
Bets of cash their stricken spines can’t forgo

While stomachs groan and lips
Demand smartphones, mascaras and lipsticks
Deployed to slay chaps with wanton whips
That cut and slice with savage kicks

On pates gone wan with insomnia
As limousine driven juggernauts
Splurge huge wads of notes to catalyze mass hysteria
Among street corner astronauts

Whose flight to Cupid exoplanet
Fell on its face
As moral worth net
They chose to suppress

In the face of perennial penury
That nibbles homesteads bereft of meals
In January
When cash overloaded sovereigns strike asymmetric deals

In which they beat down the cashless
Unless the poor rebuff cash offers
Preferring the famine and thirst the voiceless
Endure twenty four seven cos their coffers

Cash they’ve never seen
Cos fate shifted the balance of resources in favour of the few
Who more often than not turn out mean
To taunt the poor who shift on a church pew

As a tycoon blurts, ‘There’s a price tag on you
The sooner you acknowledge the reality
The better your world will enliven anew
As on you my bucks bestow and restore dignity in humility.’

Premium Member Take Me There

There’s nothing like the lovely rustic charm
Exuded by the far flung lush green country farm
Where trees in majesty sweep heaven with their crown
And birds with celestial music, the surrounding valley drown

Where the air, so pristine and sweet like the forest glade
And Heaven with rich profusion bless the country wide.
Where the rural folk in relentless toil, values, and pride
With their simple, artless, and modest life reside

My senses have ere long etched every sight n’ sound
Of that countryside wherein my childhood inextricably bound
Take me to that place of bliss to which I long to retreat
And splurge in memories that cascade down in surfeit.

Minds Morally Blind and Unkind

Deceit and duplicity, vengeance and vanity
Exploit our weaknesses and dissipate our souls’ strength
As arrogance cockroaches multiply their insanity
We diminish the strength of our faith

The more we immerse ourselves in new technologies
Stung by advances in artificial intelligence
Deluding our ignorance and bestowing empty eulogies
On partners we loathe despite pangs of conscience

That work harder to retain a semblance of humanity
In souls gone dead and mad with material wealth
Accumulated and concealed from established authority
In the mistaken belief that the theft we perpetuate in our stealth

Shan’t leave a trail auditors will pursue
In our bid to aggrandize an increasingly hollow ego
Gone insensitive and unreceptive to the moral malaise and torture that ensue
As the moral compass hitherto central to our lives we forgo

In preference for catalyzing the rat race that the vulnerable
Crush underfoot
To splurge with disgust as the horrible and the irascible
Thrive in the sight of the sycophants we recruit

As cheerleaders
With unabashed shame
In the midst of death traders and peddlers
On whom we’re not able to pin blame

Cos together we rot
In body and mind
Our consciences bought and caught
Up in webs of ego-tripping that render us morally blind and unkind.

“The sea is an underwater museum still awaiting its visitors.” – Phillip Diole
______________________________________________________________

In the endless expanse of the ocean's domain.
Calm, circumfluous crystal collides coiling terrain.
A bed of iridescence behests the view.
Turquoise riddles, azure feral, and true

Humpback whales waltz on the horizon stage.
Their majestic demeanor, the ocean's sage
Waves akin to a shroud, coral reefs below.
In a cerulean ebony, enigma utopia to know

Tidal waves waltz ripples in a twirling thunder.
Foams that fizz and fatuous horses canter under
An aphrodisiac shore, paradisal and grand.
Where quicksilver spume kisses saffron sands.

Barefoot on the shore, spate, and pelagic breeze
The brine in the breeze, a savor of the seas
Seaside pearls and garrulous nautical dreams
A seamount allure, where kelpies do gleam.

Waves wreck as cymbals, water splashes spray.
Unplumbed bedrocks where sunfish play.
Blase naiads and abysmal gaunt cries
In the abyss, the embrace of diastrophism rises.

Swell of the abyss, corrugated, and red.
Balboa sails in pits due to intricate coastal spread.
Nebulous littoral shores, worldly and true
In Japan splurge, a seabed quells the view.

With a caper and a queen, the gulf turns alive.
Natal seaboard, where nexus coldness does thrive.
Beyond the gloom, where ocean waves are silver,
Moonlight pulsates, spritzes, and yelps as a river.

Whipping and splashing, an aqua symphony
The ocean's orchestra in idyllic harmony
From abyss to surface, the music does swell.
A symphony of water, where stories do tell.

In the moonlit dusk, waves waltz and sway.
Their silvery, pellucid shimmer steers the way.
With every pulsating and splashing sound.
Ocean's placate melodies and quiddity abound.

Abyssal symphony is a seraphic sight.
Where nature's cynosure beauty bears flight.
Waves, akin to dancers, gracefully behoove.
In a rhythmic squirm, their sapidity grooves.

Susurrus slipshod secrets of the steep
Splashes of euphoria, sojourn, and sweep
A symphony of splendor, a chorus of grace
The ocean's melody is in every embrace.

My Favorite Holiday

It seems my Christmas spirit has gone up in smoke,
‘Cause every single Christmas I always end up broke!

To give and get a gift or two, with little or no use,
But “it’s the thought that counts,” seems to be the best excuse!

It’s just another day to splurge on Mom’s Christmas feast,
With all our favorite relatives… and the ones we like the least!

So I’m poorer and fatter on yet another day…
Oh, what the heck; I’ll enjoy the wreck of my favorite Holiday!

Premium Member Birthday Cake

I’m happy and contented,
I feel like I could burst.
When the cake came out,
I got my mitts in first.

Some call me a glutton,
others say I’m speedy.
Actually, I’m just smart,
energetic and speedy.

I hope that on your birthday,
you somehow get the urge.
According to my book,
it’s your turn to splurge!
