Spending makes people feel really good. In view of the debt we and society have accumulated, we might want to be careful personally and together socially. The reliance on constant growth to fuel the economy sets us up for some difficult times ahead. How do we sustain a steady state that allows us to preserve the the health of the environment? It's not going to be less regulation on environmental matters or putting business in charge. For real, we need leaders, parents, and teachers who support our mental health by example. We need to learn self control. This is especially true at this time of year when we are urged to spend for the holidays. The linked song broaches this subject comically.

Though urges could empty a vault Obsession to splurge cannot halt! Surge spending can’t pause Ending it might cause Our mental gestalt to default

Thanks Karen, Mr. Lehrer has a lot of work out there, and most of it applies to issues we face today. We do indeed get a charge from charging a purchase. The best things in life are free from a monetary transaction, but most people in the USA can't accept or understand that.

Deep and wise take dear duke, it must be that time of the year especially for you? As its thanksgiving and Christmas too soon, and its sad everything is now so expensive not just in US but everywhere and all these sales , etc indirectly persuading people to spend, is not very helpful while so many are struggling with bills, etc! Your wordplay here is brilliant and its always a pleasure reading your work. Hope you are doing well, sending you light always!

IE, I am awed by your comment and appreciate the light you share and send. It's a very kind thing for you to say and makes me smile. It's Thanksgiving here tomorrow and Christmas soon. We use this as a time to get together and communicate with family and friends. There was a round of global inflation recently due to the pandemic and the resulting spending to prevent a depression/recession. It's unfortunate, but we see more coming every year. It's getting harder and harder to make ends meet, so we may need to revise the ends we seek! At least the spiritual realm has free access for those like me who remain unaffiliated.

The house of representatives holds the purse strings, they decide spending for those who think it's only democrats who do nothing, some of these people work 3 jobs! 1 job should be enough! For every welfare scammer there are 10 billionaires bilking the public. DT will rob from the poor to give to the rich as the fat cats get fatter, but I guess that's OK. Very funny Duke, I just wanted to wish you and yours a very ** Happy Thanksgiving ! *I'll be away* Cheers to Tom Leher! ~xo Anaya

Anne-Lise, while it's good for short-term business profits, all this activity goes above and beyond what we really need to be at peace with our planet. In the long term I'm also bothered by what this all means. The message is not what we need to hear at this time.

Democrats spent. Of course, you know that. Musk and Ramaswamy are going to cut the fat. No more pay for doing nothing. I admit I would like some attention to environment from both parties; the one that doesn't address it, and the one that pretends it does.

Hilda, thanks...According to the U.S. Constitution, our Congress (of democrats and republicans together) determines spending. Musk and Ramaswamy will suggest removing regulation and agencies that interfere with their profit making and to provide money to set up a colony on Mars for them (not to cut the fat). Last time I looked, Musk owns a space exploration empire. With a gradual transition to a more sustainable world interrupted and as regulation goes by the wayside, more damage to our world will occur and the cost externalities will greatly outweigh (by orders of magnitude) any savings these foolhardy billionaires suggest. We might want to save the planet we already have at our disposal.

It amazes me how companies urge you to borrow and spend spend spend then you have to take out high interest loans to pay it off. These eye-catching advertisements should be banned that encourage folks to spend what they haven't got, rant over. Keep em coming Duke. Tom

Thanks Tom. It's amazing that the effects of online shopping give us a double hit of dopamine. Once when we order and again when we open the box after it arrives. Addictive behavior will consume us and becomes more and more difficult to control. You're suggesting that government could regulate some of this. I agree! Education could go a long way...including helping people understand what really matters in a global society. However, as education becomes less of a priority here, the psychotic Nero will be fiddling while Rome burns!
