Snowshoe Rabbit

A very lucky rabbit
Is the northern snowshoe hare …

Each year he gets new furry boots,
And a fur coat with each pair!

Sea caps, white, shadows
Fin, cutting above surface
White caps part, Great White

Herons calling out
Congregating over cove
A gaggle of clouds

Eagle soars above
Snowshoe hare, new tracks, no hare
Disguise of whiteness

It was dusk when she came slowly across the snow,
dusk was in moments and she was ready;
her big snowshoe feet made her steps steady,
her eyes saw a rabbit and she crept forward low.

She had mated as snowflakes floated in the trees,
and in the spring her babies would be born;
she made a hidden nest of branches torn,
and had to eat for her babies all she would seize.

Her home was a cold northern forest protected,
no longer was she prey for the fur trade;
yet her fear of humans will never fade,
now, laws allow Lynx to never be neglected.

In a leave strewn nest the utter of a low mew,
four small kittens wailing like violins;
and new life is created and begins,
but nature is so cruel and four became two.

In the forest there are so many preying shades,
and she must leave the nest to hunt rabbit;
for at dusk this is her normal habit,
when mother returns there is blood on the green blades.

The forest has many eyes seeking and waiting,
and not all the baby creatures survive;
not all the Lynx population will thrive,
this part of nature, I will always be hating.

It was supposed to be
A simple snowshoe expedition
Nothing glamorous or too exciting
But the day started out magnificent
Gloriously sunny and mild
Ideal for newbies and amateurs
It felt like a girl guide outing
Average age was ten
The trail was awesome
Breathtaking on either side
Snow covered bushes as far as you could see
Glistening sprinkling of fairy dust
And here we were single file
A line up of coloured tuques and snowsuits
Getting acquainted with our snowshoes
Making our imprints with every step
What a surprise awaiting around the corner
A huge bonfire
Who would have guessed
Roasting wieners on a branch
Best lunch we ever had
A most magical marvelous memory
When all was done and said
Nothing left but light fluffy snowflakes
Caressing the last few remaining embers

Welcoming Winter

WELCOMING    WINTER

In mid-winter we will be wed:
Oh, that the cool whiteness could be sped !
How my heart waits for her cool embrace
And the feel of snow flakes on my face,
Running warm through her frosted trees,
Watching the river’s fastness slow to freeze,
And the warmth that follows a ski-run,
And the snowshoe races full of fun.
Waiting so long is a weary task,
Till I’m crumping her white damask
Into  pearl-grey  hollows ,
And  shaping   shallow billows.
Then our hands touch in warmth and we know
There’s only a few weeks to go :
A smile from each diamond encrusted branch
Shows   my  face all   a-blanch.
As my love walks close by me in a hush
My heart overflows at her special blush.
On sunlit silver snow no cold-eyed tear.
Oh my heart yearns for wintry land soon this year !

Yule

Shortest day, longest night
Celebration of light
Glistening ice and snow
Temperatures low
Bare trees
Ponds freeze

Dress warm
Long sleeve uniform
Cardigans and sweatshirts
Goodbye mini skirts
Silk and wool
Indoor pool

Soup and stew
Don’t misconstrue
Wish Bread
Glaze spread
Cinnamon and cloves
On stoves

Ice skating
Snow tube inflating
Snow skiing
Snowboard leaping
Snowshoe wearing
Spectators staring

Hope, intentions, and new year
Celebrate and cheer
Yule brings hope of life
Robins and wrens in strife
Red, white, green, and gold
My, it’s cold!

Before Spring Comes

BEFORE SPRING COMES

This valley’s empty blueness
Is filling now with clear sunlight.
Snow clumps tumble from branches
Into man-deep drifts soft bright -
Warmth-rounded, but still chilled.

Big  snowshoe-footprints  harden
Into pools of blue shadow -
Setting off from a house and garden,
Half-hidden, marked only by the low
Recent prints half-filled.

The cream esteem my winter coat,
a mink nearby agrees,
temptation wiles beyond the gloat,
a warming gentle breeze.

The juggernaut that Arctic blinds,
the absence of my food,
of barks and twigs and other finds,
the breath of Spring feels good.

Our ashen whites will prompt away,
to chestnut furriness,
we'll blend right in without delay,
Earth tones are more than less.

The thawing out of wintry days,
the freshness of the spring,
revealing plants and shoots neath rays,
the wealth this season brings.

The game afoot, who'd be the prey,
the predators are loose,
a field of grass now on display,
sweet green blades, flags of truce.

A mumbling heard neath weights of snow,
a pair of eyes are slushed,
two ears pop up to words of woe,
it's just a dream, I'm crushed!

Snow Prints

Pure and pristine
 layers upon layers accumulate on the scene,
 cold winds blowing, sifting, drifting, serene;
the sun rising high with little warm
 blinding brilliance after the storm
 the land asleep safe and unharmed;
shovels scraping, snow quaking
 plows earth-shaking
 snow ready for the taking;
but in the yard, nature's warden
 the soft blanketed snow garden
 a pure untouched slate well pardoned;
where sandy fawns sleep
 the imprints of large and tiny feet,
 feathered friends and creatures come out of retreat,
squirrel tracks here and there
 comparable to a snowshoe hare
 suddenly the world exists without a care
and peace returns for the moments marked
 focus for the times harsh and stark
 and futures upon which we shall embark,
leaving imprints upon the snow
 soon enough, it's time will go,
 shoveled to the side and swept away
waiting on the end of January days.

I was born in a cave den with seven other kittens in the Fall,
born blind and helpless but my nose could sense my mom;
all I wanted to do was nestle close and drink her sweet milk,
as days passed by my eyes opened to discover my siblings.
We loved to tumble and play in the den while mom slept,
at twilight she would leave us and come back smelling of blood;
and this was our routine for months until the snow fell,
I could smell it cold and fresh outside the cave opening.
Wanting to explore I would peak out but mom dragged me back,
then, one day she let us follow her into the snowy night;
our snowshoe paws left big footprints as we followed closely,
mom taught us to be silent and taught us to catch snowshoe hare.
I grew quickly and discovered I was an agile climber and good swimmer,
with my sharp teeth I killed the hare as I roamed boreal forests;
my fur was dense and beautiful and I was a solitary Lynx in Canada,
I avoided humans as mom had taught me- they would kill for my fur.
