Our oldest light goes by the name cosmic
microwave background radiation—
CMB for short. She's everywhere:
fluorescent birdsong of modern offices,
hum of corner store ice cream cases.
Have you heard of her? This gal was born
screaming into freedom from the expansion
of a bang so big we're still talking about it.
Expelled from the recombination's gender-
less cervix, before there were names for things
like body, or heat, or quiet. She slid through
the pitch of first dark, not yet sure what
edges were, dragging the weight of a beginning
behind, shelter for and shedding of photons
loosened from a fire she didn't start.
Somewhere in this thirteen-billion-year drift
her lips kissed the eyelids of stars that hadn’t
learned to die yet, passed the chubby fists
of planets still cooling in their cribs. Fell into gravity
wells, bent her spine around a gape of black holes,
and climbed back up again, tired but full.
We call her background now, like she's an afterthought,
the hum of hums beneath the humming—we call her 'it'.
Add a T to her beginning and we might as well
call her mother. And when she reaches us, frail
and stretched thin, we catch her in our instruments
(where we found her), our desperate, outstretched hands.
For our effort, like a good genie enduring a bad rub,
she tells the story of our origin from a certain point—
then distracts us with tricks when we ask her about
the end of it.
A silk top I asked Santa Claus for!
How did Mr. Claus handle that chore?
On that beautiful silk
I found stains from spilled milk.
Milk and cookies for Santa? No MORE!

Mix black lentil batter
Must add salt and spices
Make holed rings, put in oil
Meduvadas frizzle
Mouthwatering, fluffy
Melts in mouth, soft, crispy
My most favorite snack
Fishy and Medusa like

Shady (steak out) waiting
cold smooth incalculable expectant satiating

Had found a lady for snack.
So beautiful and hot,
He gave her a shot.
Suck her blood, AIDS virus attacked.

SNACK ATTACK
I grabbed the sealed snack that looked good
and thought it was some other food.
Infant of my mind.
A test for the blind.
My buds scream “No Good!”
*Through clear plastic looked like skittles. It was M&M’s. Both are good
but when you are not expecting a certain taste, it blows your mind.

I snuck to the fridge to eat a bite
Ever so quietly late at night
I couldn't see where to go
I screamed when I stumped my toe
My wife called the cops then turned on the light
They sent a cop that kicked in my door
Threw me and my wife both on the floor
I had embarrassed us both
That cop ate my wife's meatloaf
And now I'm hungry and my toe is sore
The cow traveled to the moon,
He'll get a snack soon.

Had physic like a bison.
His opponents had one extra fear
That they could lose an ear.
Grandmas Snack
Grandmas long hair, nearly touching the ground
It's where my siblings gathered around
She'd give us hugs, hugs so tight
We would welcome them with great delight
On the porch we would sit
It was hard to be patient, I would admit
Do you want a banana, we would say yes
Eating carefully not to make a mess
Them bananas taste so great
I knew I wanted more, maybe eight
Slowly chewing making it last
Wanted time to slow down, not so fast
I'd give all my money for all it is worth
Grandmas bananas were the best on earth

SARAJEVO SNACK
Speak softly to the tune, it plays out in the night,
and never think that Sarajevo hasn't named the song.
Division is the rule, and fools will make our way,
our fear has brought it down on a world going wrong.
I'll still love you in Spring, in Summer, Winter, Fall,
through Sarajevo's night, I'll love you to the end.
and God has told me this, I'll know you after night,
when I fall in love again, and meet you as a friend.
The last of everyone's been written in our rage.
I've told how we will end, in all the words I write.
And these, the words from you, forever sing God's love,
but I'm the fool they blame, for bringing on the night.
Speak softly to the tune, it changes before long,
into a battle cry, dividing right from wrong.
