The Beheading of Nînwe
Ninwe is the ancient Syriac name for Mosul
(not to be confused with the ancient Assyrian city of Nineveh)
Burned books
Dead poets
Dark ages of Mosul
Smattered relics
Islamic horrors
Dark ages of Mosul
Education denied
Blind minds cutting out eyes
Dark ages of Mosul
Evil hearts
Dark Souls
Rulers in Mosul
The golden age of Islam long ago
Evil winds have blown
Now they live in darkness
In Burka tears
Fear
For years
Crucified Christians
Run run run
The museum is closed in Mosul

One or two of us
Were home on leave;
For the rest of us,
Christmas came by mail.
Our callsign: Gunslingers.
Our Military Transition Team
Was embedded with
The "Triple Deuce" Iraqi Infantry,
For a year our home
Was LSA Diamondback
Mosul, Nineveh province,
In northern Iraq
A Team member's wife
Gave us all Santa hats.
I have an old photo
Of us standing on top
Of an old Iraqi bunker,
Bearing pistols, rifles,
And those Santa hats.
My wife sent a small
Plastic Christmas tree,
Which was decorated
In the Gunslingers' office.
My mom sent a warm quilt.
When you're acclimatized
To wearing battle armor
In the high 90s and 100s,
80-something feels cold!
I remember the nights--
Dark, but full of stars,
With Orion's belt
On the horizon.
Soldiers made bonfires
In the oddest places:
By a concrete shelter,
Or in classified burn pits.
Once exiting my office,
I saw a fire in the sky.
Soldiers were on top of a bunker
Drinking near-beer, singing.
Another night, I stood
Just outside of the light
Looking at some troops,
And the chiaroscuro image.
I went back to my "choo",
And penciled the scene.
To complete the masterpiece,
I inserted myself
Roasting marshmallos.
I went back to visit them,
Showed them the drawing,
Then completed the picture
By searing a marshmallow.
Christmas was what we made of it.

Prose Poetry
When the call of the Lord came to Jonah,
“set out for the great land of Nineveh!”
he was angry inside,
and decided to hide,
on a Tarshish bound ship leaving Joppa.
Then the Lord sent a great wind on the sea,
ne’er a more violent storm could there be,
there on destiny’s brink,
the ship threatened to sink,
while, old Jonah, was below deck asleep.
Surely, each sailor’s heart fainted with fear,
as the ship they were unable to steer.
“Wake up, Jonah!” they cried,
“get thee quickly topside,
and fervently beg your God to draw near!”
Now, Jonah knew that this storm was for him,
as in his heart he remembered his sin,
he thought he was sunk,
when they gave him the dunk,
and had to choose whether to sink or to swim.
As soon as Jonah met up with the ocean,
Both the winds and the waves ceased commotion,
then along came a whale,
and old Jonah grew pale,
as it swallowed him up in one motion!
Three long days in that big fish he stayed,
vowing never again would he stray,
relieved not to be dead,
and with kelp on his head,
onto dry land, our dear Jonah was sprayed!
Please, allow me, now this moral to mention,
that when the Lord God gives thee direction,
you must not delay,
set out right away,
His good judgment you must never question.
Should by chance, you hear God’s voice compelling,
“ head thee out to Bangladesh or New Delhi,”
best get on the right boat,
and pray that it floats,
lest you end up kelp covered and smelly!

Russia is now in the Middle East as earthquakes dramatically increase
A couple signs of the beast but in these times such signs don't cease
As the twelves tribes of Israel return with anti-Semitism on the rise
Many of the things you will learn may also come as a real surprise
As in Revelation seventeen four, she dressed in Purple and Scarlet
This is what Cardinals and Bishops wore in being called this harlot
The euro-roman empire is back and many rumors of war, and war
The Red Moons were right on track, as man is wicked to his core
The Euphrates will run dry, a new 16 dam project just completed
For this China and Russia will via as a deal will save the defeated
But it's the Almighty's Israel this Army will be God drawn to take
Not sure exactly what Seal but that is going to be a big mistake
Earth itself has begun to convulse as man has stripped her bare
And if you still have a pulse of these events you must be aware
A forced Israeli land deal for peace as from Judea they will flee
No longer will God they fleece or else as we are all about to see

I never wanted to be your mighty mouthpiece
I never asked to be the morning trumpet
in the troubled town
or the prophet clown
that would be scorned from all around,
I just wanted to be a mason
like my forefathers before me
to build homes and temples
with honest tools that my heart could handle
to have a family that could worship you
with a love that would never need to lean,
but you demanded that I go to Nineveh
speaking to me like some inflexible father
pushing me with the wind
scolding me with a stubborn sun
chilling me in the nervous night
so I ran,
I ran to the sea so I could be me
found a ship sailing for Italy,
but your wrath found me on the water
tossed the ship to tip
and there I was adrift
worried that this was it,
swallowed by a whale
thinkin that I failed
I prayed to you with passion
pled to be undead,
you, oh Lord, brought me back to the living,
your mercy taught me about the calling,
in my second chance
I received my first glance
of this great gift,
to you, oh Lord, I look for love...

Daniel Joshua and Jonah
(children's song music & lyrics by Joan Donnelly 1991)
Verse 1
Now Daniel was thrown to the Lions but he was in God's care
Daniel prayed to God three times a day and Jesus heard his prayer
Jesus locked the lion's jaw tight because Daniel did what was right
And the King arrived and set Daniel free ...safe in the King's arms Daniel did flee.
Chorus 1:
You can now hear Daniel praising:
Oh Halleluiah, You scareded dat, awsul bad, maded me mad, that awsul bad lion away.
Verse 2:
Now Jonah was a rebel who refused to obey
Then he woke up in the belly of a whale swimming 'round in his tears 3 days
God sent the whale to Nineveh where he spat Jonah out from his insides
Cuz Jonah said he'd obey God and spread the gospel to the Ninevites
Who turned from wickedness and God saved their hides
Chorus 2:
Oh Halleluiah Jesus, Jonah sang, I love you
You opened the mouth of the whale and rescued me
Cuz I'm too good for blubber stew.
Verse 3:
Now Joshua was an Israeli soldier and a gem to God was he
Joshua and army marched 'round the walls of Jericho 'til they tumbled supernaturally
And God never, never, never, never, never, never , never ignores those who repent and pray
Jesus sanctifies, and he purifies cuz He is the Light and the Truth and the Way.
Chorus 3:
Oh Halleluiah Jesus I love You ooo hoo hoo hoo
Oh Halleluiah I love You, I love You, I love You

Lyric
Noah survived the flood with sons Japheth, Ham, and Shem.
Along with the animals of the earth, God spared them.
With floods, He vowed never again to do such a thing.
God made a covenant with Noah and his offspring:
“You and your sons shall populate the world as you go.
Look up into the clouds and you shall see My rainbow.
This is a sign the covenant is everlasting.
All creatures shall thrive, along with each human being.”
Noah’s grandson, firstborn of Ham, Canaan was his name.
He had to serve Shem and Japheth because he brought shame.
Ham also gave birth to Cush; who in turn brought Raamah.
Raamah extended the line with Dedan and Sheba.
Shem was fruitful producing many generations.
Arphaxad and Aram’s progeny would lead nations.
Among Japheth’s seven sons were Gomer and Javan
Their descendents also had produced many children.
Among Ham’s descendents was a king who defied God.
A mighty hunter and warrior, he was Nimrod.
His kingdom had contained land from Babylonia.
Moreover, it stretched as far south as Assyria.
His great cities included Calah and Nineveh.
They lived on land between the Euphrates and Tigris.
His people united and strong were making progress.
Nimrod proclaimed, “We have one language and great power.
Let us assemble and raise a very tall tower.
This ziggurat will provide a stairway to a star.
We are an ambitious people, and we can go far!”
A new great city appeared on the plain of Shinar.
With formidable walls constructed with bricks and tar.
God realized these persons were filling with contempt,
He wished to halt their foolhardy fallacious attempt.
Perplexing their language among them caused confusion.
They stopped construction and divided with diffusion.
God’s almighty power can never be defeated.
Therefore, the Tower Of Babel was not completed.
A ziggurat is a temple of Babylonian architecture resembling a pyramid. It begins
with either a square or a rectangular base. Additional stories with smaller floor
space create a terrace effect on each level.

God called on Jonah to do something he didn’t want to do.
So Jonah beat a path for Tarshish to hide from you know who.
But when he was on the ship God caused the sea to rise,
His shipmates thought that tossing him over would probably be wise.
Then God sent a fish to swallow Jonah and give him time to think,
But after spending three days inside a whale Jonah began to stink.
So Jonah prayed to God and promised that he’d try to do much better,
He’d go give the word to Nineveh if it meant he wouldn’t get any wetter.
So God made the fish puke him up somewhere near his goal,
But the smell of fish innards and bile was starting to take a toll.
By the time he’d walked to Nineveh the stench made Jonah sick,
But the combination of the message and retching odor seemed to do the trick.
Nineveh promised that they’d be better than God could ever conceive,
If only Jonah would hurry to the city gate and oh dear God please leave.
I guess that old saying is true, the one that people with in-laws tell,
That after three days of being around, both fish and prophets smell.

Light Verse
That Jonah, the one in the whale, as from God he tried to run
Being tossed from his sail he pretty much thought he was done
Finally after three long days the whale spit him towards shore
And no matter what anyone says this is what happened for sure
Now he had a three day trip ahead, Johan made that trip in one
Going to the King of Nineveh to plead for the city to repent
And they did, till the second Generation, but there Jonah did sit
Waiting to see the fall of a nation in still feeling Nineveh was a pit
It was hot on that distant hill funny how that big gourd just grew
Almost giving him a slight chill a new love like he never knew
Then the worm ate it from the inside and he lost such an accord
Jonah sat there and cried, not for Nineveh, but that stupid gourde
I have no gourde by my side but it is here that I do sit and wait
But oh! how often I have cried in the knowing of mankind's fate
The thief comes in the middle of the night as so are you unprepared
I just pray you come to see the Light and know that someone cared
1 Thessalonians 4:9
But as touching brotherly love ye need not that I write unto you:
for ye yourselves are taught of God to love one another

He is sworn in holding a branch
Cut from the tree of life and a vine
That's sacred he swears to protect
His people the tree and the vine
He swears by the sacred abode
Shortly afterwards he gets the vision
Go to Nineveh Jonah and warn them
He departs not to nineveh but to Taasis
Aboard the ship they have no option
But to throw him overboard into the sea
In the belly of that big fish choking on seaweed
Three days seem like three thousand years plus
This is too much he's now praying earnestly
My Lord i will accept your will i will go and warn
The fish spews him in the great city of wonders and signs
This time round they spit on him pour dirty water on him
Hurl insults at him beat him up yet he says repent.. repent
His message over he then moves to the edge of the city
In the deep of the night Khat the sacred tree grows over him
And the African orchids encircle the roots - the base of the tree
Roy rubs his eyes inspecting the fruits from the tree -tree of life
Three days from today this city will be destroyed....
Thinks Roy he will tend to this tree together with his descendants
In the midday sun a ground worm ate the root stalk of the tee
It then ate the root of the vine... both tree and vine dried up
And a SOUND says... Roy i have forgiven this city i will let it live
Roy is astounded but the SOUND rebukes him..
Roy you are willing to protect a vine and a tree
Yet you care not for this great city go home..
Roy departed and went back to his home
The sign of the prophet Jonah will portend the coming of age...
Roy remembers during the ceremony he had chewed the leaves
And the visions were no more than Khat visions he's still perplexed
Roy goes back home and starts reading the sacred scripture

Narrative
After Jonah got out of the whale, he went to the city of Nineveh and warned the Ninevites.
He told them that God was going to destroy them because they weren't doing what was right.
God was going to destroy them in forty days because of the evil they had done in the present and the past.
The King heeded the warning and he and everybody else covered themselves with sackcloth and began to fast.
The Ninevites turned from their evil ways after they were warned.
God saw that they had changed and he was no longer scorned.
God spared the Ninevites because they were no longer unfit.
Jehovah isn't a harsh God and that sure did prove it.

The sonorous voice of God woke Jonah from his siesta one fine day,
Saying, "Arise! Get ye to Nineveh and I'll brook no delay!
I've volunteered you to go there and preach in that wicked town,
The people are very unruly - they need a good dressing down!"
"No way!", said Jonah, astraddle his ass to Joppa, fleeing from the Lord!
"If I can find a ship sailing for Tarshish, I'll try to get aboard!"
He paid his fare, went below and promptly went to sleep,
Just as the Lord caused a great tempest to come upon the deep!
The ship was in great peril - the captain shook Jonah awake.
"Hey, dude, call upon your God - see if He will calm this lake!"
Lots were cast to sort out their plight - Jonah drew the short straw.
The crew heaved him overboard and he landed in a whale's maw!
For three days and three nights he cruised about in this condition,
Praying, "Lord, I'll do anything! Deliver me from this perdition!"
The Lord heard him and brought his misery to a pleasant end,
Commanding the whale to regurgitate and deposit him on dry land!
Now this "whale" of an experience converted old Jonah,
And he vowed to the Lord he'd assume a new persona.
He scampered to Nineveh to offer a choice vis-a-vis heaven or hell!
The Lord blessed him, saying, "My boy, you did extremely well!"

Should you ever tarry, for even the briefest of moments,
Amongst the quiet of the pre dew-drenched grey dawning,
And, wiping away just one hesitant, lingering tear,
Fancy you might hear my soft footfall moving steadily through
When gently brushing aside those thin veils draped as if they
Were the great sorrows
Which hung from the ancient walls of long-vanished Nineveh,
Feel a fleeting, but heartfelt, pang of remorse at my passing...
Know then I will have touched you as a slowed finger traces
Across the deeply ingrained lines upon a tired lovers
Aging face.

Jonah's Calling
A vision of Jonah I did not see,
Nor did I hear the Lord speak
(Who pitied the wicked city of Nineveh)
When He said to His servant, Jonah,
“Arise and go to Nineveh for me.”
“Set me free!” Jonah cried,
And said to himself,
“They are but strangers to me.”
And the Lord heard Jonah’s heart,
And turned.
In shame, Jonah ran away
To Tarshish, where he boarded a ship,
That got caught in a tempest.
And lots were drawn,
And Jonah was thrown overboard
And was swallowed by a huge fish
(Jonah prayed, and the Lord hearkened to him.)
Who, after three days, vomited him onto dry land.
And the Lord spoke to Jonah a second time,
“Arise and go to Nineveh for me.”
This time Jonah obeyed
And the Lord’s anger was abated
Because, the debaucherous city of Nineveh
Repented.
However, Jonah was jealous
Of the Lord’s compassion for Nineveh
And sulked under the shade of a tree.
“It is so cool under the gourd,” thought Jonah,
“Why should I leave? Where is my love?”
Then, a worm ate the plant.
Causing Jonah to suffer from the heat,
Who then turned and cursed the Lord.
And the Lord spake to Jonah a third time,
“And yet, you did not plant the gourd,
Nor did you tend to it.
You know not hence it lives
And canst not say when it shall die.
Shall I not have compassion for the people of Nineveh
Who cannot tell their left hand from their right?
Doest thou well, to be angry with me?”
And I remembered, written in the Book of Isaiah, 1:18;
Of the Lord’s abounding love and patience.
“Come now, and let us reason together,” saith the Lord:
“Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be white as snow;
Though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.”

Methinks there are many of us who have given up on us.
They say that these are the last days of the USA as we have known it.
It's possible that they are right, but methinks that they are giving up too soon.
Giving up I say on America like Jonah of the Bible had given up on Nineveh.
America is a mixed bag of ideas and opinions, many of which are protected by
the US Constitution, and in my opinion, these are NOT the last days of America.
I do not know if 'it's the 7th ending stretch or the bottom of the ninth, 2 outs,
2 strikes, but I do know that the game is NOT over. Moreover, you and I are still
on deck to do our part. The aforementioned city-state of Nineveh was in God's
mind a candidate for mercy. However, in the mind of Jonah, those people were
candidates for judgment and destruction. A couple of weeks ago in my dear
city, one man beat another man to death. That was evil. Yesterday, I saw a
news clip from another city of a man being robbed and beaten to death. They
took $1. That was evil. In our Region, a man found $5000 in an envelope, and
he is seeking the owner. If he does not locate the true and rightful owner,
he will donate his find to charity. That is genuine goodness. Such goodness
can be multiplied many times. With all that I see wrong with America, I dread
to think of a world without an America.
