"A True Champion"
by: Eric L. Boddie
Knowing you were 24 when you also retired an eight
Only one g.o.a.t. in my Lifetime has achieved that fate
Be it 18 or 81, a little more than everything is what he gave
Even though he wasn't playing baseball, he had so many saves
Belief in one's self is a lesson he truly taught
Remember all the last days, how many times was 60 caught
Yet, he didn't stop for there are still battles to be fought
As you must understand, perfection of his craft is all he sought
Nothing I saw him do was something that could be bought
That's why the truth of what happened should never be distraught
And to Ascend with one's child is something I am simply unable to describe
Along with two coaches, two mothers, two daughters and a pilot touches deep inside
And about them, it saddens me that I really don't know much
I just hope and Pray that their Lives Are Things God Has Touched
I, too, wear the number 8 as Dolemite of the Fall 1998 line of the Alpha Pi chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. entitled the Blue Renaissance so I was destined to be a fan of Kobe's so you know that I was touched by this tragedy. With God, however, there is absolutely nothing we can't endure. My Prayers and condolences go out to everyone affected by this. God Will Pull us all through....

Soul's sword,

I am woken by your cries in the night
I mount my steed and prepare to take flight
Tell me of the dragons that I may fight
To rid you of pain and restore your sight
Let down your hair from your prison towers
That I may place you amongst the flowers
And soothe your worries in April’s showers
Restoring your strength with all my powers
I will mend your heart and banish distress
And, with love and care, will make you hurt less
Relax and be touched by my mind’s caress
And let me serve you, my precious princess
I may not ride a horse, or dress in white
But I promise I’ll always be your knight ~
HEART OF A CHAMPION
When you see someone all alone doing
what no one else even tries to do,
Take note of the person you are seeing
making something really special come true.
For when they self push all to the limit,
where they never have dared gone before,
they increase the strength of their spirit
that will allow them to always do more.
For deep in them lies something special,
a heart that will never be beat.
A fire burns brightly within it
of determination you cannot defeat.
And when their great challenge is over,
when finally they have conquered their test,
they stand at the top of the mountain
much higher than all of the rest.
So if you are waiting for someone
to force you to work hard today.
You’ve lost to the heart of a champion
that works all alone everyday.

The Champion
Controlled by remote desires I trip the laurel fuse of longing ancestry
My Mom had been chosen to compete diving from the high platform of
Hitler’s mania for ‘Kraft’ ‘Freude’ living space terror raised arms and all in
guns blazing a misplaced childhood offered on the altar of manic delusion
Wreaths gathered dust on unmarked graves white crossed monuments
administered torches blazed parades marched lined the ‘Higher Faster
Longer’ ‘More Ideologically Corrupt’ abuse of innocent festival of youth
Replaced demounted sacred Mount Olympus for Auschwitz and Stalingrad
My mother was no Jesse Owens who blackened Nazi dreams of whiter than
white no ‘Black Consciousness Runner’ shoving gloves to the sky in post-fascist
Munich 1972 quite close to Dachau where Jews Sinti and Roma vanished
at the hand of Swastika’s psychopathology for denial distanced denied memory
A colour TV to watch remote from a distance was the closest she ever got to
her dream of honour and glory disgraced by politics assassinated like Israeli
athletes in a continuation and preview of fanatical devilish monsters high and
low jacking innocent sports for propaganda politics malignant ideas and ideals
In 1944 there were no Olympics titanic battles were scrambled instead in
General’s Admiral’s chessboards and tactical blood baths no dives into chlorine
and water just rotting gassed trenches exploding the dreams pawns in the Games
crushing to bone meal the Peace with their tanks and grenades fusing demise
1948 came to London awaking from ruins and rubble and the brain washed
German Olympians were banned from all sports had they not spread eagled
their passion prostituted their vigour for eugenics death Fuehrer and Fatherland
My mother tainted blemished in blood and in water a fallen hero on her sword

It's not always about winning first place
What really counts is that you challenged the race
A true champion can bravely accept defeat
Still feeling good about himself though he got beat
The important thing is that you gave it your best
Keep a smile on your face and forget about the rest
Through it all, always maintain your self esteem
You're not a loser just because you didn't make the team
It doesn't matter if you are falling way behind
You're still a winner when you cross the finish line
It's your courage and determination that sets yo apart
Your chances may be small but you've got a big heart
In life don't let your failures bring you down
Have the will to get up when you hit the ground
Through life's journey many trials will come your way
But believe in yourself and victory will be yours someday
Who ever knew
That to crucify Him on the cross
That day'
Would revive the people
And make them pray
A crutch for the absent'
Just another miracle
For that day
All of Gods' people answered
- For-
Christ had carried that day
Never - The - Less
Their were so many people
Who had seem to have lost their way
They were weeping with sorrow
As thought their were no tomorrow
They wept and they prayed
For just another day
They wept and they prayed
Till death did them part
But on the third day He had arisen
And yes, Resurrection was a part
Of He
To be the Lord Almighty

who's the best champion here?? me!!
come and step up if you dare if you're coming for me
I suggest you come hard/ harder then you ever did/
show me what you've prepared/ be cheeky and candid/
i'mma sit back and just stare/ watch words flow from your lips/
when you're done fall back/ get ready to receive my gift/
you gon' see colors and places that you wish you never went/
when I'm done your brain's gon' go limp/ you'll be swearing and advertising me as a hypnotist/ i'mma straight body you/push you to the left and right side/ yeah, I'm coming through/ hit you with that body slam/ make you wanna tap out before the end/ have the bell ring, referee raising my hand like yeah
you're the champion/ everybody screaming yeah that's the champion/
yeah I'm a champion
I am a champion,
the thought and feel of it is real, the fact being indisputable and the reality pure,
with others, and in singular isolation victory over the misery of disrections is now,and future,
I am a champion because I have led myself and others to victories,
victories over the malvolent and lurid labors,
living, toiling, dreaming, and breathing within the parameters of a system foriegn
to my instincts, alien to this suture,
I am a champion along with others because I weep incredulity
at the untaught magnitude of a work ethic producing abject glories,
brought to my knees,my heart beats rife with pain, fear, & the mud of doubt,
brought to lunacy by the dispassion that consequence savors,
rising, and rising as emotions explode at the chance and moment for domination,
justification, to obliterate the obstacles, making room for stories,
awaking with dry pain in the eyes, nausea, dizziness, despair,
seeking simple reasons for motivation to go forth,
wishing quixotically for more sleep,
finishing the day feeling dumb, dull and brazen like a fenced horse
hungry for edification, rectification, seeing the great steppe with a risk too deep,
going on week after week with new sprains & strains on mind body & spirit,
always some mistake, cuts, bruises, burns & hyperextensions,
compulsively micromanaging,hyperanalysing, a manic finisher,
nothing will dissuade me from the thankless pursuits of daily perfections,
the anatagonists, the ones who sneer & discourage casually at the noble attempts
of the able champions trying to maximize efficiency,to excel, win,
raising that standard which the mediocre claim can't be improved,
I and others jeapordize our health, safety, sanity so to accomplish the impossible,
I receive no grand trophies, new contracts or publicity,
nobody takes my picture or delivers a prize,
there are no special tokens or passwords on the table,
we strive ferociously for the sake of victory, for the knowledge of limits,
this way setting greater goals & tests,
being testaments for others who climb,
do I want acclaim from Deity for my successes, distinction for my sacrafices, no,
I work hard for me and others to be sublime -

gaping mouth kiss to canvass
on my jugular death’s caress
my spirit’s quenched combust
a champion in defeat’s bust
eyes swollen shut, “and he’s out!”
down for the count on my gut
prey food to a superior predator
beneath the boot of my victor
ear compelled to my new level
to the maniacal laughter of the devil
gasping bloodied snot for breath
choking on own uprooted teeth
flashing a mockery of embarrassment
cameras capture my lowest moment
in my fading hour...falling apart
in living colour...creating art
twelve rounds in life’s gruelling bout
going toe to toe with an unfair lout
to be counted out of existence
I will accept with reluctance
“one, two,” referee takes a closer look
eight seconds to be written out of the history books
“...three, four, five, six, seven...” don't hesitate
...and I’m up at the count of eight!

I stand atop the mountain high
A champion, I’ve earned my prize
Through sweat and tears, I’ve reached the sky
My triumph now, it’s no surprise
I faced my fears, I pushed on through
My team beside me all the way
Together, we achieved the new
The glory that we have today
But it wasn’t always easy
There were moments of defeat
We had to stay strong and believe
In ourselves, in our team, in our feat
We trained hard, we gave it our all
We knew we had what it takes
To rise above, to stand up tall
To be the ones who never break
And now we stand here, victorious
Our hearts filled with pride and joy
We proved that we were the best
Through hard work, teamwork, and employ
So let this victory be a lesson
To all who strive for greatness too
Believe in yourself, in your passion
And with hard work, you’ll see it through
For champions are not born, but made
Through dedication, sweat, and tears
So keep pushing, don’t be afraid
And conquer all your doubts and fears
And when you reach the top of the hill
And feel the wind upon your face
You’ll know that all your hard work still
Was worth it, for this is your place
A champion, with heart and soul
A leader, who inspires the rest
A winner, who never loses control
But always strives to be the best
So let this victory be a reminder
Of all that you have achieved
And let it drive you to be kinder
To yourself, to those in need
For champions are not just about winning
But about the journey that they take
The lessons learned, the growth within
And the memories that they make
So when you look back on your life
And see all that you have done
You’ll know that every struggle and strife
Was worth it, for now you’ve won
A champion, in heart and soul
A leader, who inspires the rest
A winner, who never loses control
But always strives to be the best
The moonlight shimmered through the ripples of the lake water
The stars danced about like the animals down under
Calm and peaceful, was the atmosphere there
She sat at the edge of the ridge with great wonder.
Staring out afar, her sadness disappeared
As she watched the beauty of nature unfold
Like a child she dangled her legs in the water
If the trees could talk what amazing stories could be told.
On the other end a couple lay in each others arms
Enjoying the scenery from above.
Stealing a kiss now and then and caressing each other
then glancing back in eyes that were full of love
This had been their favorite place and safe haven
Where she and her sister Lily, would come down to every night.
A tear began to fall as she remembered those times.
When they both would escape each time their mum and step dad would fight.
Hesitating at first, she turned, then looked back
And the painful memories appeared
Looking again at the house they once lived in,
where her sister and she had cowered in fear
Lily would hold her tight and dry away her tears
And magically produce a chocolate from under her sleeve
She would tell her stories of princes and princesses
And that they would come true if she just believed.
It was Lily’s way of comforting her, making her forget about the ordeal
Although she too was scared, she would hide away her pain
She pretended to be stronger just for her sister’s sake.
Though it killed her inside to watch her mum get beat up again
This was their waking nightmare every single night
Dwelling in isolation and a monster at their side
They thought it would never end, and this was their only fate
But as luck would have it, the man up above was always there to guide.
The monster had been defeated, dying by his own hand
Falling from the roof into to a spike on the ground
It killed him at once and not a tear was shed
Instead a sigh of relief was finally found.
She looked on the other end as the memories disappeared,
And smiled as she saw Lily still staring in her husband’s eyes
The past was gone and a bright future lay ahead
At peace now, as she sat and admired the beautiful night skies.
I have survived four years of abuse,
being mistreated,neglected,and ignored
being scared,worried,stress of all misuse.
I freed myself of all hurt and pain,
couldn't hardly tell the sunshine
for all the rain.
Losing weight and worried about my health,
often sitting and wondering,if I brung all
this on myself.
Just wanted someone to love me,
giving up on love altogether and scared
of not being happy.
I am a champion and I made it this far,
and I'm learning to trust and love again
with all my heart.
I am a champion and I won't go back,
I'm pressing forward and keeping
my life on track.

Golden flecked emerald eyes
Glow through the darkness
As she emerges from the shadows of her lair
Crystal blue scales shiny and smooth
Shimmer as they hit the moon light
Leathery wings spread set to take flight
Her majestic serpentine tail whips gracefully through the air
As thunderous roars that resound from deep within
Sparks fear in even the bravest Knight.
A formidable predator
Known through many a land
Soaring high skyward bound
Villages and towns left in the carnage of her wake
Battles lost and vanquished foe
Men turned to ash from her fiery flow
No chains can ground this mighty beast
No blade too strong
No arrow too sleek
Leaving a charred and desolate land
Triumphant once again
She the Dragon champion of the sky.
