He left home this morning

Saying goodbye to his mama
And continuing on out the door

He sat down at his favorite desk
Where he could hear the best
And began to flip through the pages
Of an amazing book he’s found

That morning
you had asked
your maid
why she wasn't
smiling happily.
Was it not
Independence Day?

She had paused
in her meticulous
dusting of you
priceless paintings.
She had looked 
at you;
dead eyes
set in a
blank face.

Bewilderment
lacing her voice,
she had asked,
"Independence day?
What are we
free from today?"...
