The headlights of a tractor drew my great-grandfather to his death.
Anglerfish of steel, power take-off a maddening buzz –
Was the barn dark? Could he see the terrible twisting machine?
And did he see it, in the instant before the ordeal
The forty days’ hellish road ahead before he reached heaven?
Did the lonesome valley stretch out before him in the gleam of the wrenching clamor,
And did he lean out and see the glow at its end?
Shriek and wail, slam and crunch.
Did the dying man see far?
And would it have been better, after all, to know what would be coming?
From plowshare to fig tree such a divide, better not to know, I think.
Certainly better for my uncle, who found him there.

I’m just a little goby and I swim above the sand
I’m glad to live beneath the waves and not upon the land
I hear there’s cats and birds up there that love to dine on fish
So as a little goby I’m right here where I would wish
My fins kick up a little sand as I go on my way
I’m looking for a tasty meal which I do every day
Perhaps I’m quite a hypocrite as I seek out a morsel
For like a cat, a shrimp would send a shiver down my dorsal
And there it is, my lunch today is flitting to and fro
It’s almost mesmerising so I guess I’ll have a go
I swim up very stealthily and open my mouth wide
The sand erupts… and it’s an anglerfish I’m stuck inside!
And so I sit here hoping that another fish might follow
And I can swim out as he finds a bigger fish to swallow
I cannot bare to think I might be chewed up to a pulp
And I can only hope the last sound I hear isn’t, “Gulp!”

Yellowish leaves like gold flake necklaces fall;
Sunshine gleam like golden snakes on them crawl...!
The sky seems blue dominated rainbow,
Clouds, in gaudy garbs, play a fashion show...!
Each fading bloom bids bye to the other,
Mourning weather environs does smother...!
The fragrance of flora fills the smell buds,
The scent of healing herbs in the breeze floods...!
Sneezing of cool water streams gently splash,
Fins of anglerfish like rain lightning flash...!
Ripe figs, plums, and passion fruits shake their heads,
Nodding winter though they feel many threats...!
Weddings of blooms, leaves, and fruits mesmerize,
Though these seem strange for starving butterflies...!
Sun, moon, and stars stand still needing graces,
The universe and cosmos show faces...!
Midst brightness and darkness autumn moves on,
Forerunning Christ's coming like Baptist John...!
Splendors of autumn within I treasure,
Though some I have spelled, they're beyond measure...!

hello
my name
is Ambrose
and i'm
a male
anglerfish
i admit
i've been
since birth
attached
to my woman
not even to say the
word
love
but
because
of her blood
and above all
so down
in the deep
i need her yes
i am
dependent
on where she
swims
and where
she goes so
yes i
yes i
depend
on
my
wife's
life
and i
never will
be able
to make it
without her
