Would You Still

Would you still love me if I told you I adore you night and day - or would your knowledge of my capture be my doom - to fall to you I might forsake the interest I might pose - while we remain as shadows on the edge of the hardwood floor - specters waiting to see which is most haunting - who will be the first to slip into the spiral of romance - relinquish control in favor of hope ... Would you still love me when we've melted into each other's arms - or would your soul soon sigh from pain after knowing pleasure's curse - that the best is the first-fruit of the harvest and all after is much worse - and we lock step, trampling some dreams while we stride - to the bitter end, together, surely there is some cause - that will seal our lives with meaning ... Would you still love me when I perish from this earth - taken far too young by the scythe of dreadful death - who has no remorse in his empty eyes - could I dare to believe you'd treasure me - though I had nothing left to give ... I ask these things with solemn smile - watching you with cautious desire - If you really knew the pain you'd face, would you still love me? 1 December 2018 Written for "Would You Still Love Me?" poetry contest, sponsored by Edward Ibeh
