"winter's Day"

“My Winner’s Day” Walking in a winter’s wonder land, Feet wrapped in gunnysacks, making tracks, Eyes blinded by snow glare, “I‘m a man!” In hand I carry my wood chopping ax, Fervently looking for a Cotton Tail to wax. My passion in a winter’s wonder land, The snow is deep under gunnysack feet, My thoughts address growing up to be this man, A ten year old searching for something to eat, The beans and spuds are near unto deplete! A blue northern winter grips Arkansas, To find a rabbit to eat would be such a treat, No hope or time to wait for an early spring thaw, The cold is penetrating my gunny sacked feet, I tread on hoping this growling stomach to beat. Walking in 1957’s winter wonder land, A family to poor to pay even attention, One day I’ll beat this oppressive fate’s hand, So hurts my heart even now to make mention, Though I know in heaven I have Love’s pension. This story tells of my joy in the winter time, Despite near frozen gunny sacked, feet, I enjoyed winter, each minute was truly mine, I found inner true self, though body near deplete, Matters not was a bit short on something to eat! For welcoming winter contest In Honor of Carol Brown

I really enjoyed reading this one, John. It makes me want to sit on your front porch and look out over the mountains...and to reminisce with you and your wife about old times here on mother earth. You have created a beautiful image of life...and afterlife in this poem. Good luck in the contest.

You really recreated the winter of 1957 in Arkansas, John. Times were tough then and I fear there will be many hungry families again this winter, but the beauty of the snowy wonderland always brings us joy. A marvelously descriptive and touching quintain for Carol's contest and I wish you success! Love, Carolyn

We know that you made it for you are here to tell the story..I like the line we were so poor:"A family to poor to pay evne attention".I have heard that line but it got my attention here.People as a whole were poor back then but we as children did not know we were poor because everyone else was also.At least most of those around us.Thanks for stopping by my blog.My son has a picture that was in the paper of Dr. Burke. On FaceBook on Tommy L. Kendrick.I am glad that I chose this one to read.Sara

wow, I think you did really marvelous with this. WEll, mind you, I don't yet know what a quintet is. So if you did it right, it seems to be a bit like a pantoum or something. Anyway yours is very unique and well written. Best of luck in the contest. LUv, Andrea
