Notes About The Poem

For a Garland String of Tankas contest by John Anderson

Winter Wonderland

winter found its way
midst icy mists of snowfall
and its bas relief
of abstract patterned snowflakes
to please young and old with its

centurys-old splendor
as trees of lights and tinsel
light boughs of fresh pine
with hints of forest faeries
A wonderland complete in

its snowman sculptors
with rosy cheeks and big smiles
that beckon singers
round fireplace remembering
many prefer the summer

some of us prefer summer

I'll take Summer too, but every season has its gifts as you have so nicely shown. One of my favorite parts of the Christmas season is the songs, especially the older traditional ones.

I think maybe February is my least-favorite month because the wind is blowing by then. Thanks for commenting, David.

You have pictured a beautiful winter landscape with snowflakes falling and snowmen being sculpted. But I prefer summer as many do. Happy Christmas, dear Ann.

This one reads like a good contender for the contest. Way to go. Thank you for sharing it with us. I hope we don't get the bad weather here. In the south, we are not really prepared for it. Sara K

Thanks so much, Sara! I hope you don't get bad weather, either! It was 67 here two days ago, but today is cloudy. uh oh. I hope you have a great Christmas, regardless.

Dear Ann, I loved how your tankas captured both the mystical side of winter, the abstract snowflakes and forest faeries, and the communal joy of snowmen and fireside songs. Makes the season feel magical, a true wonderland. Holiday Blessings, Dear Ann, Daniel

Dear Ann, I adore your garland string of tankas exulting the nostalgia and seasonal delights of winter.. but I truly enjoyed the surprising turn of the last line! So cleverly done, my wonderful poet friend. Endearing imagery with a great end twist for a smile. Warmest wishes.. ~Susan

Exquisite verse, indeed, each season unfolds its own peculiar marvels, a quilt woven with the threads of time and change. We must simply observe. Appreciate your comment on my page
