How cold it was that one December day. We’d put on boots and walked into the wood, but in new-fallen snow, we lost our way. As dusk began to creep, we understood our peril, and our hearts were filled with dread! Then something strange! Above a bank of snow appeared a cardinal, bright cherry red! As if the bird could tell us where to go, we followed it, and to our great surprise, we found a bench. Quite unbelievably, on top of it we saw before our eyes two mugs beside a red pot of hot tea. Warmed by the drink, we kept hope in our sight. The red bird led us home by fall of night! Dec. 27, 2016

Andrea, I do love poems about hope, and Winter Magic gives one a sense of never giving up, even in the midst of our dread and unkind circumstances. Love the magic here, and the story you wove around the simple picture. Fantastic, a fav for me ~ John

AD, Have to go back and correct your name. Not Adrienne. Sorry. Cardinal is our state bird. Does Iowa actually have trees. I lived in Kansas once and they only had a few. Elm tree ones and they all died from a disease. jth

Being Irish I assumed the cardinal was in robes. And I love the tea of course Andrea. What a lovely winter tale.

What a great story and poem. I can see the red cardinal before the white snow! The first time I saw cardinals (they don't exist in my home country) was the winter we emigrated to the US - I found the bright red birds fascinating.
