“Fling open the windows to peek into wider vistas opening and let in light and fresh air”! ~ By Poet
Every day, he walks up to the window, A practice he has recently developed. This window is his sole opening to the world. Sometimes he sits on the reclining chair by its side, And watch for hours life unfolding. This morning from his lonely cottage The old man vacantly gazed, At the lazy curl of smoke from the chimneys His eyes further wandered over, to the dew dampened meadows And the sloping paths that ran round. Over them how many times, he had rambled leisurely, With Jack, his spaniel that died a few months ago. Though single with no legacy to leave behind, Never he felt so lonely as of late, And the memories of his dog keep haunting him. One morning he found his dog lying stretched out. Alas! From that slumber, he didn’t rise! Now with nothing to look forward to in life, He is in no hurry to leave his cottage as before. Each day of his life starts with the same ritual. Every day the old man would brew his tea. Pour it steaming into his large porcelain mug, And get settled on a chair by the table, Looking through the small window, His only opening into the wider world! ___________________________ April.24. 2023 ~ Placed First~ Writing Challenge ‘W’ Words Poetry Contest Sponsor- Constance La France

Dearest Valsa, the empathy of your words comes straight from your caring heart. Such a sad story of loss and grief that stifles life - his life companion, his dog Jack, gone but mourning now the companion breathing its inertia! My heart aches with the sadness of your poem. Congratulations on your win. Blessings to you!

Valsa you depicted the action of this old man so well I felt I was standing in the room with him. There is sadness in loneliness, and I feel the next generation may have it a little easier, with the technology we have now for older folk to be able to use computers and connect with the outside world in this way. Your poem is lovely Best wishes.

So sad, but what a great way to do the window theme. (this kind of guy needs to adopt a new dog!)

loneliness is a strange friend. It does things to you, you can't possibly imagine. I hope you never have to find out what true loneliness is like. i do not see this so much as sad but neglect. My neighbors know I live alone and they come check on me almost daily. Thought provoking write, Valsa.

How sad, and there are so many lonely, mostly old people around, you have captured his emptiness, his vacant staring, his lonely boring uneventful life that even if he died today, would anyone know or care? SO SO sad! Hugs, blessings, Jennifer.

Sadly this falls into many of us, traditions of man, being content, rituals, repetition, just looking out small window, : ). Yes, sad for the man in your poem though, that one would feel nothing left without his dog, they do bring much joy and happiness to life

Sad but well-constructed. One could spend hours watching the movements down below. Not with my house though. Too much construction going on.

Very sad Valsa. Got me thinking about the story of Greyfriars Bobby. A bit like the dogs perspective I suppose.
