Notes About The Poem

POTD 9/23/2025

Premiere Contest WinnerWaterfall of Shadows

I watch
as sun slides down in the sky.
The shadows increase in length,
a dark waterfall descending
upon the sandy beach.
Slowly I inhale and exhale,
savoring the fresh flavor
of the evening’s briny sea.

My eyes devour
swirls of lavender wisteria
beautifying the vast expanse
of the darkening cobalt sky.
My sweet summer
has slipped away
with the setting of the sun
on this autumnal equinox day.

The waterfall of shadows
is now a fountain
totally engulfing the shore,
having evolved into
night’s giant all-consuming chrysalis
enwrapping me body and soul.

A sudden rush of wind
and small ripples on the water
transform into turbulent waves
lashing the shoreline where I stand.
I tug my sweater closer to my chest
as I tremble in the gloaming.

What a beautiful poem! You wrote this while I was absence so I'm glad for this opportunity to read it. Surely you have become more comfortable writing free verse? Congratulations, Rea, I'm so apleasa ... CayCay

Hi Andrea, a lovely beach scene. Watching sunset by the side of a sea is a joyful experience. But when summer passes from our life and as shadows fall, it is painful. Congratulations on your great win.

Andrea, your beautiful poem brought to mind every beach we’ve had the privilege of experiencing from the East coast to the west coast, and from Mexico to islands of the Caribbean. A Fav poem for me. Congratulations on your top 10 win on Mile 9 of my 2025 Poetry Marathon Contest. Keep your running shoes on, because Mile 10 has already started.

Your free verse is in top form here. The imagery of shadows growing, wisteria dissolving into darkness, warmth turning to chill all reinforce the end of summer at the Equinox. Beautifully worded with poignancy but not over the top, a tricky balance mastered by few. A delightful read and a Fav.

Certainly deserving of a win. I especially liked the last 2 lines in each stanza of your poem. My favorite one, "having evolved into night's giant all-consuming chrysalis, enwrapping me body and soul" Such beautiful metaphors throughout. It painted pictures for me of environments that I love to be in. I am delighted to have found your peaceful, fragrant, picturesque, dreamy poem :)

This is the first day of Autumn, and that means, "Summer has slipped away." Seasons are like the wind, softly felt and then, gone in the blink of an eye. You paint such vivid images with your words, Andrea. This is beautiful with a bit of melancholy, all at the same time. Congratulations, on Poem of the Day. My best to you. Hugs, Brandy
