Van Gogh

The moon speaks in phases
the sun a voice of lasers
every cloud a picture story --
write me a day, and I’ll paint
you a Starry Night.

It depends on totally new: words are words, same words...but how they are used can be unique in measurable ways; if a write promotes a new sense or sensation, feeling or depth, an alive modicum of tacit mystery, something enchanting or possessing, spiritually captivating for the reader or writer, then one is closer to original -- personally, that is why I do not strictly follow traditional forms, and do not use contest prompts -- wounder about often seeming aimless. I feel such rigidness interferes with any chance of my achieving original success. Can't say that I have ever achieved writing such a work other than to my own satisfaction? -- This is just me. Probably all wrong. But because I can't do something, has never stopped me from trying. Only attempting to give some insight into my own process. I am no professor or authority of any sort on poetry, obviously. I just write. I enjoy writing and reading the fine works of others.

It is so hard to create something totally brand new these days. Is it really even possible, Joe?

My philosophy is, if one can't write it a bit differently, why bother writing it at all, no matter how pretty or motivational the work -- why repeat what others say beautifully? Creation is infinite -- why limit one's self, and one's God? When writing I throw out tons of publishable material, till a phrase pops onto paper, that has a hint of something original. Then I go with it. Let the Muse lead. Thank you, Andrea. Blessings.

Here you have scripted a beautiful word painting. So pithy and beautiful... I really see the craftsmanship of Van Gogh.

Fortunate enough to have grown up in New York, where there are some wonderful museums, I got to study Van Gogh up-close. The one, though, that got me actually physically ill, was a portrait of a baby...? I think it was by Van Gogh -- but some others, like Starry Night, were transcending.
