I smiled when I saw fire's embers -
each one creating, drawing heat.
Pull one of those fiery members,
it goes cold; bonfire less complete.
The human body, every part:
the liver, fingers, lungs and heart
perform their functions for the whole -
each serves its crucial, valued role.
A bonfire's embers made me smile,
receiving heat and giving back.
The fire seemed less complete when I
pulled out one member, going cold.
Metaphors teach community:
a diverse, thriving unity.
[Charonnet variation of the sonnet]
