a hummingbird, perfection in tiny form

Mid December. Most birds have vacated our yard, having instinctively flown south for the winter. Out of habit, I look out my kitchen window anyway, not expecting to see anything colorful amidst the barren tree branches. Then, something tiny flickers by, capturing my attention. I blink my eyes and move closer to the window. Hovering on invisible strings over the hummingbird bird feeder is a tiny, cigar-shaped iridescent bird, its fluttering wings forming part of a sonnet to the air. Once satiated, it flitters away, resuming its migration giving colors to the sky and leaving a fresh canvas, ever part of the onwards moment. Watching a hummingbird is a rare treat this time of year, an unfolding moment to savor.

oh, I didn't realize you didn't have hummingbirds in your part of the world. I guess that would be a long migration across the Atlantic Ocean. Thanks for your kind words and for blowing hugs! You're a special person, hugs, Sara

Dear Sara, you have masterfully encapsulated a breathtaking and extraordinary moment - your photograph and poem harmoniously echo the essence of this occasion. I am deeply grateful for your homage to the enchanting hummingbirds, and I extend my sincerest wishes that they discover a veritable sanctuary brimming with resplendent flora. May their ethereal presence grace our gardens once more with the arrival of spring.

thank you, kind Sotto, for your visit and for your mindful words about my poem and the picture. I'm glad you appreciated the picture and the homage to hummingbirds. I agree, I hope for their graceful presence come spring. When we lived in El Paso (because of its close proximity to Mexico) we saw so many more hummingbirds that we do here in North Texas. We both stand at our window and watch them, captivated. Have a wonderous Wednesday, your poetess friend, Sara

Oh my goodness the poor little thing. Sure hop he makes it south before he freezes to death. I sure hate to see anything left behind when they are migrating. A fine write here. God Bless and Merry Christmas, JB

Dear Sara, I adore hummingbirds and I adore your beautiful poem. How wonderful to see this tiny flying gemstone in mid-December. Our last sighting of a hummer was mid-September up North here in Massachusetts. I'm always so sad when they abandon my feeders to migrate south. Your Haibun is touching and exquisite my friend. I'm so glad your fluttering humming friend brightened your day! Warmest wishes.. ~Susan

thanks, Susan, for your visit...I, too, adore hummingbirds and am sad when we see our last one here in Texas. In what part of Massachusetts do you live? My uncle lived in Cape Cod and recently moved. We visited him and found the area just breathtaking. Wishing you a delightful evening, Sara
