Thoreau's Stone

Society was petty tedium to him, but woods were friend. There, by a pond, he fashioned a simple cabin shelter and lived with mother nature as his favored captain. Simplicity was his theme and need a perspective thing. If it did not sustain, bring joy or entertain, he felt it whim. To him, accessories and treasures were error-effort reaped for they often severed and tethered his time and energy. To his surprise, one day, rays of sunshine flashed a prize so artful before his eyes that he wrapped it like a parcel and hiked home to place it in a nook on his cabin mantel. After many weeks had passed, he noticed with a gasp that his marbled, shiny keepsake shone artful no more. Smoke, ash and inside-other had all its glory covered. He could not condone what his ownership brought on. When the next day’s morning sun shone upon the pond, in fronds, freshly-nature cleaned, gleamed one stone.

CayCay, I had to include this wonderful write in the winners as reading Thoreau in high school altered my whole relationship with the planet and its inhabitants. Thanks for participating in the contest

For me it was 10th grade. Homework was term paper and I was assigned Thoreau for my subject. That assignment was absolutely pivotal in the formation of me. The first hippy, and that's just the beginning of a Thoreau list, were I to create one. How cool that he impressed you in such a significant way, too. Thanks for sponsoring! Be well ... CayCay (When on his deathbed, his Aunt inquired, "have you made your peace with God?", Thoreau answered, "I did not know we had quarreled."

It is my endeavor in the sense that if I don't enjoy the maintenance of something, I don't want that something. I do have knick knacks and such that bring me visual joy, mostly handmade by family members, but nevertheless phoo-phoo items! (apparently I don't know how to spell phoo-phoo) Hugs ... CayCay

Thank you, Arthur. I have admired Thoreau since I was a teen, the first 'hippy', you know! The 'one stone' theme took me straight to thoughts of him. All the best ... CayCay
