For six months we’d been dating and were blissfully happy Now it was time for my boyfriend to meet my parents The minute that Hamid walked through the door My father jumped up and left the room without a word Then my mother followed like an obedient little lamb There were raised voices in the kitchen I can still hear my father’s words She will bring shame on the family What will the neighbours think … Tears spring to my eyes I had hoped my parents would understand Hamid gives me hug, tells me everything will be fine My father comes back into the room and asks him to leave He leaves, with my hand held tightly in his FICTION WRITE 05~13~17

Good Morning Jan. This is lovely and smoothly executed and conveyed. Sad as well without saying. Yes, the whole pride and prejudice of it all. The ending is priceless and most beautiful thought. Well done completely. Enjoy the morning and day.

Although fictional, unfortunately there's also a lot of truth to this. Despite the progress that's been made over the past century or so, racism is still prevalent in our so-called 'civilised' society... I like the layout of your poem! Is this another level to your write (with Hamid being an Arab and the word-shape representing the Star of David)? Regards, John.

I hadn't really thought of the layout until you mentioned it John but it does resemble the star of David:-) hugs Jan xx

Glad this is fictional. As a member of a bi-cultural marriage, I'm glad to report that in modern Australasian this response is rare. Yeah for us.

Jan, you have a deep understanding of life and the way in which we were meant to live. We all have the same Father. I applaud you for writing this one.

Jan, as I read this I though of an old Shel Silverstein poem ..."The best use for an alligator's skin is to keep the alligator's insides in". Great thoughts in a poignant poetic wrapping.

Yes it is fiction for me but as you so rightly say there are so many forms of prejudice - in a multi racial/cultural society it is such a shame we can't be more accepting:-( hugs Jan xx

It's an emotive subject Arthur. Of course prejudice also applies to colour, creed, religion, sexuality, disability, and poop poetry :-( and so many other aspects in life I could go on but I wont ... such a shame we can't live and let live:-( I've read of couples committing suicide because they are prevented from being together and in one recent case the daughter being killed by family members for the shame she has brought on the family:- (hugs Jan xx
