The Wild Carrot

The wild carrot is a deceptive weed like certain men whose masculinity is without suspect and causing envy in others less sure of their own. But by mid-summer, at its peak it takes a reckless turn, betrays its gender, undergoes a change – brazen, shocking, revealing – not at all expected. They say some men experience a change like this at the shrinking edge of life. The onset of impotence? Some subtle hormonal shift? A suppressed dark yearning of a natural but restrained craving? Perhaps all of these. With the wild carrot the change is natural, yet courageous, a fulfilling of its true self as dainty Queen Anne’s lace.

I remember Queen Anne's Lace, but didn't know it was a wild carrot. A very interesting poem, Maurice. Clever how you compared its change to a man's hormonal change.
