The Way It Is

For years I have been only pieces Of who I was before. Running away from the past, Which I return to in the still of night. Cannot help looking back, When the present is only whispers, Of what I used to have. Imagining you here by my side, Forgetting this time without you. You hold the best of me in chains From far away, As I slowly crumble to ash. Robbed of my dignity, my vivacity, This world easily traps me in misery. With each day as a reminder That I should not love you, But that I do.

An apt title... '...when the present is only whispers,' '...you hold the best of me in chains. The saddest love is that which is unrequited. The word 'should' usually means an inability to cope and is somehow an excuse. So well written Martina with great shape and flow! Keith

like parasite and host....we hold on to those who hurt us most....like an addiction we just can't quit....like that bad habit we just can't kick....but you have to find the answers deep down in self....and if you can't find the strength, you can always Ask God For Help....He's A Great Listener....and nice poem martina....;)
