The Sham Of My Humanity

Evergreen flavored mantras did nothing to purge bitter bile from my lips nor slake the smoldering thirst for a Rosary remedy. Tick-tock petals unfurled one by one as your poppy shed its last sepal releasing a scarlet sigh across sunset skies whilst I placed a tender kiss upon your twilight. If but for your gossamer bloom in persimmon perfection, I would not hunger for your ambrosial whispers nor rue the earthly drought of undying nectar. I stray, a waif lost with my armful of loss, blind behind the tear-rusted folds of a weeping veil’s eclipse. My psyche a pauper rich in the poverty of penniless promises, empty as echoes in hollow holes ringing with wringing reverberations. In the grasp of atheist fingers I clasp Holy beads tilling cries and whys. Every tear a sorrow sown in brambles, whose sloe fails to ripen sweet redemption in the fertile sham and barren sand of my humanity; crushed by the tusk of this damnable dusk. Your work always is strong in its imagery but here you've outdone yourself--this is, without flattery, a great poem--especially in the way the last stanza captures perfectly the existential dilemma of faith coping with a semblance or 'shadow' of 'reality' limited by our senses and brains, that can hold but one thought at a time. Congrats on near perfection!

CONTINUED: "A waif lost with my armful of loss"... that last bit, "armful of loss" makes me think of something incredibly sad ... a baby in one's arms, tragically passed away ... or perhaps a holy book that was once treasured but (due to circumstances left unexplained) was forced to abandon. Curious what you had in mind there. A fave for me.

I relish where my imagery took your heart and imagination, Timothy. Thank you for sharing your beautiful, insightful musings with me. They reveal your tender, sensitive soul. The speaker in this poem laments the loss of someone loved more than anything, and rues the shattering of dreams. Faith is lost and prayer is of no use, both are cast aside, her humanity embittered and broken. It could have been a child - or a lover.. I'll leave that for you to wonder :)) I am honored by your fave, dear poet, thank you. Warmest wishes.. ~Susan
Date: 5/6/2020 4:45:00 PM
Wow. You really put your heart and soul into this one ... such intensity in nearly every line: "My psyche a pauper rich in the poverty of of penniless promises" "In the grasp of atheist fingers I clasp holy beads" ... incredible lines, just by themselves, regardless of the rest. Not sure what inspired this feeling of dread and extreme loss of faith (loss of someone close or some other reason? we are left to wonder) Either way ... your emotion went beyond its peak ... and the overflow was poetry.

Timothy, I am so pleased with your response to my poem. We've all experienced loss, on different levels, in different ways, in our lives.. this was just an outpouring of an accumulation of loss. Sometimes my pen loves to dabble/explore/get lost in the dark instead of the light.

This piece brought to mind the Rhythm Drake has in many of his pieces. That is a good thing because I love his style. This piece for me is exceptional.

Susan, these waters are deep. What sorrow or tragedy has inspired these cries of loss and despair? I can only hope these ringing reverberations are not the sound of your own heart breaking. But how saliently you have penned this hymn of travail! "My psyche a pauper" is (ironically) so poetically rich, as is "Every tear a sorrow sown in brambles". Brilliant and poignant, my dear Susan. (whispering) I hope you're okay...

John, it's wonderful to see your shining presence gracing my poem! I am elated by your warm, rich response. The beauty of your empathy shows, my dear friend.. I wrote this piece about 7 months ago.. it's hard to say what inspired this, other than maybe an accumulation of heartbreaks, the kind that make up the mosaic of one's life -but nothing as dramatic as this piece, thank God! This was the result of a lot of poetic license :) Thank you for your most lovely comments and for your very kind concern. All is well with me, and I sincerely hope all is well in your world too. Warmest wishes always.. ~Susan

Where do I even begin - the alliteration of 'poverty of penniless promises' - the internal rhyme of 'a waif lost with my armful of loss' or the contrast of 'atheist fingers clasped Holy beads' - truly full of lovely agony - absolutely breathtaking!

Rendering depths that can only come from a poetic heart that has been long immersed in touching, feeling, seeing, truly loving-- life and poetry as the great Art that it is. Exceptionally deep , flowing and image filled, a gem of rare illustrious gleam. A fav and a true pleasure to read.. Even if I am a bit late to have found this gift of beautiful poetry..

Simulation in life, intended or not, is something which we as humans have to put up with....whether putting up with others or with ourselves! We learn to live with our defects and hopefully also learn to overcome them. // This poem is beautiful in every way, and any poetry lover would read it again and again, just to savour every drop. (a fav) ~ Warm regards & Hugs // paul
