My older brothers told me tales
about a red-eyed ghost.
They said, “We simply chased it off.”
You should’ve heard them boast!
One night I saw my curtains move
and then--two bright red eyes.
A coldness swept across my bed.
I felt the terror rise.
I pled, “Please go away. You’ve shown
ability to haunt!
Go visit my brave brothers now!
You’ll hear them jeer and taunt!”
My brothers’ hair has been cold-gray
since they were in their teens.
We three are sure it wasn’t caused
by something in their genes!
