One star in the heavens can Change the course of the universe, One smile can hold back a tear, The key of faith can Open the door of happiness, And love can banish all fear. One open heart, full of love, Can make the hater Hang their head in shame, And the hawk embrace the dove! One simple song, full of melody, Can make the sad one Shout with glee! Enough encouragement and Persuasion from me, Can make the spiritually blind See what I see. I certainly can't Count all the stars; And I do not know the distance From Jupiter to Mars. But, I do hope a change takes place, In this world of ours; And that Mama, Daddy, And the elders Will know that society, not they, Are the ones who failed us. One hurricane can Tear a city down. And one committed crew, Can build it up from the ground! This is the oldest surviving poem, that I have in my personal files. It was written by me, at the age of 17.

You wrote this at 17! "One open heart, full of love, Can make the hater Hang their head in shame," So empathetic and amazing!

Evelyn, such a wonderful poem, I am happy it survived and you could present it to us, and your music is divine. Was it a hurricane that destroyed your poetry? Mine was destroyed too but mine was when our family home burnt to the ground, I lost all my early poetry and then my poetry pre 2012 was put in the garbage, not even shredded, just binders thrown, they exist in some garbage dump_Constance

That's sad to hear, about your early poetry being lost. My earliest poetry was lost through youth and carelessness, but I'm glad this one survived. The really good thing though, is that we're still basically the same people, and we can write new poetry that still reflects our earlier selves. Hugs-:)

Society has failed us, and I love it that you knew this at age 17.
