The Longest Night

No doubt in his heart no doubt in his mind this is the longest night of his entire life for time stood still when He looked into his eyes and caught his lies. To have denied his Lord to have denied his faith the pain of his guilt will be surpassed only by the painful agony of the impending death of Christ. Peter replied, “Man, I don’t know what you’re talking about!” Just as he was speaking, the rooster crowed. The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times.” And he went outside and wept bitterly. Luke 22: 60-62, The Bible, New International Version 08 March 2015

Kim, with both power and grace, you capture the personal hell Peter must have experienced after denying Christ. Indeed, it must have been the longest night of Peter's life. Thank you for an exceptionally insightful poem.

Enjoyed this very much. You took me back to that night and I felt Peter's anguish. But Peter learned from this and never again denied his faith.

Yes, you are correct. In fact, he has regained his passion for his faith that took him eventually to the height of Christian ministry and world history and eventually his painful death. Thank you for dropping by and sharing your thoughtful comment, JoanMarie. :) KIM

A touching and sad poem dealing with the loss not only of Peter's faith and loyalty, but we are confronted with all the pain that is connected with this. Emile. #7

That night, however long and agonizing, was ended with a great joy on the third day from which we derive our hope and faith. I loved the theme and the way you have chosen the words.. Wish you the best of luck in the contest my dear friend!.. :) Fadi

Thank you, my friend. Fortunately for both Peter and me, God's love is never-ending, it is new every morning. Throughout that long and painful night the Lord never gave up on us, and on anyone who humbly repents and realizes the wrong turn we have taken. Hugs and blessings!
