The Forest, Never To Return, Part 2
Reggie unlocks the door
And turns the knob
To face the monster
In the dark
Strangely, like before
We never sought help
From the deputy sheriff
Who came when we called
But when you are groggy
You mind is reactive
Squeamish and screamish
And wholly irrational
Once, we assumed
It was a prank
A children’s game
At our expense
But then, when,
We opened the door
There was NOTHING
No one was there
Nothing but darkness
And not a thing
Could have fled
Without being seen
So why are the children
Laughing . . .
Laughing so hard
At nothing?
Will we ever know?
Are we doomed
Doomed by fate
To die a miserable death?
A never-ending descent
Into the bottomless pit
Of our own
Unreasoning fear
Reggie, Reggie, no, stop
Reggie, nooooooooooooo
“It’s, it’s, OMG
Aiiiii . . . Aughhhhhhhhhhh!”
