The Fluffed Up Pillow
I fluffed up the pillow
on her side of the bed;
turned on the heated blanket
to make her side hot instead.
Placed a glass of water
on her bedside stand;
made sure there was that lotion
she liked to rub on her dry hands.
I turned down the blanket
so she could just slide in;
and to make it all just perfect,
fluffed up her pillow once again.
I smoothed out the sheet
so she wouldn’t have to lie on a wrinkle;
and a little spray of lavender,
in the air I did sprinkle.
And just at that moment
when I was ready to turn off the light,
I fluffed up her pillow once more
to ensure I got it right.
And then I fell asleep
after dropping a few more tears;
that fluffed up pillow of hers
hasn’t been used for fifteen years.
