The Family Show

When day’s lights fade The Sun burns red I fly back from my school When dusk creeps in A lonely dusk And brings a chilling cool, I take the keys And go on knees And open a small trap door The room lies there Hidden and bare And a shining metal floor I close my eyes And pray twice In a voice clear and low— Come robot brain Its time again Now give me a family show. Out goes the light And comes back bright And mom comes smiling in And dad sits there On a rocking chair Tall, dark, handsome, lean. He tells me a tale She bakes me a cake They kiss me and hold me near, When clocks chime nine We go and dine With cold meat, bread and pear. She pats my head And puts me to bed And bids me a happy night I close my eyes It feels so nice And out goes the light. Out goes the light Then comes back bright The room stands lone and bare The images are gone I stand alone And smile and hide a tear.
