The Butterfly
blank verse
Remembering the adage we were taught,
in teamwork sports, cooperation counts.
"The winners take no credit nor the loss."
She briefly touches my left shoulder, then
before I get my body turned around
away she flies along the lane unseen.
My eyes adjust, I see her head appear.
Both arms together seem to pull the air
as feet propel her like a dolphin's tail.
My relay partner breathes on counts of three
the most demanding stroke of all to learn,
its own reward - to swim the butterfly.
