Taxed To the Hilt

My hero is Henry David Thoreau
Rather than pay taxes, to jail he’d go
     With Uncle Sam’s hand out
     Thoreau turned up his snout
Refused the poll tax, voting he’d forego

An elderly woman across the street
High property taxes she could not meet
     Her house went to foreclosure
     Homeless, died of exposure
While the politicians live on High Street

Jonah dwelt in the belly of a whale
No taxes on such a home did prevail
But as soon as he got out
     Jonah faced taxes no doubt
Moby Dick's "inner condo" is for sale

I like the history in the first limerick, the sarcasm in the second and the incredible humor in the third! I may have to consult Moby Dick about his "inner condo." Congratulations on your win. The competition was very strong, so take pride in your accomplishment! Love, Carolyn

Yes, a lot is two words. I was afraid I maybe messed up somewhere and wrote it as one? Or was that a question you just had for yourself? I teach pronunciation classes to ESL students and I like teaching them the "real" way to say what we usually say, like "there's" instead of "there're" It's a fine line though, when it comes to writing it! haha. You don't want to encourage poor spelling, but if you think of how different our pronunciation is from what we actually speak, it is amazing!

H P (hire purchase) the idea being that once the reveue stream from over inflated assets has been finished, the only way to get hold of more money, that maybe is not really needed,? however the excuse would be the crisis that allows a super loan shark paydays from interest on said loan, it only a (theme) for contest

You were right on the grammar of "there's" vs. "There are". I was writing the way I speak it and for meter sake. I do that alot with the light poetry just for fun. Let me find one of yours I have not seen yet!
