Traveling Light

I am a photon a tiny bundle of energy. My brothers and I oscillate in synchronized breath; as a wave, we hurtle through black voids, three hundred thousand kilometers each second, a dizzying ride. Four years ago, we were flung from the fire of a star. A long journey, but not a lonely one, for there are many of us. We are nearing a beautiful planet where green continents swim in blue oceans. I hope we arrive in deep darkness when their star is on the other side. Perhaps one of their beings, gazing at the sky, receives us. We will slow down as we travel through the gelatinous matter of her eye and die on her retina. I will no longer be, but her miraculous brain will decode our message: there was a star.

Agnes, what a penetrating poem; you have us travel at the speed of light, and, as we are about to enter earth's atmosphere you bring us back down in the most gentle blink of an eye ever written as the earthling is about to see the light:) An enthusiastic 7 Amitiés

I agree with Arthur. This is brilliant (sadly when they get here, our planet may have disappeared by then)

Thanks, Andrea. I have them come from the star that is nearest to Earth (other than our Sun), four light years away (which is why it says "four years ago" in the second stanza), so they'll be seen by humans for a while :)

Hello Agnes. You took us readers on a journey. You have captured and met the speed of light concept. The mighty Free Verse was a well chosen format to express your entry. The ending sentence was marvelous with thought. Good luck with the contest. Well done throughout.

this should do very well in that contest, because it is an interesting one for sure...i particularly like the closure in that final stanza...i'm sorry you did not get chance to enter my contest, because i like your writing a lot; they do tend to fill up very quickly! i stipulate new poems only as a way of trying to slow down entries, but it still filled in under 48 hours! i am like you in that i need time to work on a poem
