Stock-still in gold dawn light while many sleep,
perched, scanning, on abandoned termite heap.
Expectant, skin tingles as in cold breeze
contrasting with the stillness of the trees.
The tracking beeper focuses our minds
as aerial picks target from behind.
Cheetah ten yards away now caught off guard
upwind of us, head cocked and staring hard.
Long looks exchanged, unspoken things are passed
and finally, spell broken, goes at last.
Reeling, those breathless minutes went so fast.

A memory of my time in Namibia, 2009, and the above
photo was taken by me. We nicknamed him 'Blackeye'. No fence between us. Awesome.

No fear, Rob, since Cheeteahs don't regard us as prey. The Masai in kenya regularly walk within yards of them. Still a bizarre experience, after many years of going to Zoos and having wire and walls separating one. Regards, Viv

Quite a cat encounter. Thank-you for sharing. Here, we still have quite a few people trapping bobcats for the fur--though I can't understand doing that to such beautiful animals. There may be a reason to hunt them that I am not aware of since I do understand that, but aren't there too many of us?

As a first encounter, this was special since it wasn't a fleeting glimpse but a face-off, for maybe three minutes, but you're so busy taking it in, it seems over in a flash. Got a picture, though. Viv x

A fascinating encounter, Viv. This line..."Long looks exchanged, unspoken things are passed," is the one that I most like. I've often wondered what animals are thinking when we look into each other's eyes. Great write.

semi-tame - a wild animal? I agree with you. I stared into the eyes of a silverback at my zoo (the habitat was beautiful and large). He stared back for the longest time, and I wondered what he was thinking about me. I felt respect for him, so I turned away first.

Thanks, Lin. I remember a bush guide telling us, on a similar encounter with a Leopard later in the day, that our look at it was of admiration and awe, and the leopard was simply figuring out the best way to kill us. Good job it was semi-tame. hang on, there's no such thing...aaaargh! Viv x
