Spectacular- For Contest

Stock-still in gold dawn light while many sleep,
perched, scanning, on abandoned termite heap.
Expectant, skin tingles as in cold breeze
contrasting with the stillness of the trees.
The tracking beeper focuses our minds
as aerial picks target from behind.
Cheetah ten yards away now caught off guard
upwind of us, head cocked and staring hard.
Long looks exchanged,unspoken things are passed
and finally, spell broken, goes at last.
Reeling, those breathless minutes went so fast.

A memory of my time in Namibia, 2009, and the above
photo was taken by me. We nicknamed him 'Blackeye'.  No fence between us. Awesome.

Here, we still have quite a few people trapping bobcats for the fur--though I can't understand doing that to such beautiful animals. There may be a reason to hunt them that I am not aware of since I do understand that, but aren't there too many of us? I stared into the eyes of a silverback at my zoo (the habitat was beautiful and large). He stared back for the longest time, and I wondered what he was thinking about me. I remember a bush guide telling us, on a similar encounter with a Leopard later in the day, that our look at it was of admiration and awe, and the leopard was simply figuring out the best way to kill us.
