Saving Shivers! (Winter of '73)

dang blast that bus! I was caught, near on the other side of town, waiting in the bus shelter, under the one ceiling heat lamp working.... close to sundown, with the temperature dropping quickly, way past zero, and a full-sideways-blowin' snowstorm 'bout tippin' over the shelter.... I was startin' to lose feelin' in my toes, and began fightin' the shivers..... dang blast that bus! for some reason, I looked into the snow swept corner, and there all curled up was an injured squirrel, drawn to the only heat around, tryin' to hang on!... I had gloves on so I didn't worry about pickin' the poor thing up, and I brought it to a nearby house that had a light on..... the kind people who lived there brought me and my hurt squirrel inside, out of the blizzard! .....turns out they were 'animal rescue' people! and offered to nurse my squirrel buddy back to health.... told me the buses had all been cancelled due to the hazardous road conditions, gave me a ride home and told me my little squirrel buddy was lucky my bus never came! (I look back now.... and think 'Guardian Angels' representin' me an' the squirrel, were workin' overtime that night, smilin' at the outcome!)

Excellent write James. I use to have a flying squirrel as a pet until he escaped the cage and made it to one tree. Never saw thew fellow again. Thanks for bringing back a pleasant memory. A. W. Nutter www.freewebs.com/abcedit

Isn't it amazing how "Guardian Angels" such as those you describe so eloquently in this heartfelt poem seem to appear just when they are needed. I read the poem James Fraser wrote in tribute to yours and it led me to this work. Outstanding writing, Jim! Much love always, Carolyn

Oh but I think that you were the guardian angel of that little squirrel. Thanks for the warm fuzzy feeling this story brought to me. Goo luck in the contest.

Stupendous and warm narration! Thumbs up! GOD knows how to deliver. WOW! they were animal rescuers. A lat of rescuing went on there. Goff, I appreciate the visit and comments on my poems.

Wow, Jim, this is a great story! You should make a short story out of this. I would have done the same. Last time I rescued a hedgehog from being overrun by a car. I do love your story....Gert

Hi Jim, I really like this story a LOT!!! I think I might just incorporate, "Dang Blast!!!" into my vocabulary to use at frustrating times. SMILING BIG!!! By the way, Thank you very much for the "Fresh Art Fall Tour." information. It sounds very nice. I've been trying to get together with one of my friends at the Artist Guild. But she has been ill. (And she is going blind... very sad...) I'll try again tomorrow. Take care, friend. Love, Dane

Living in the south we don't get much snow and really really cold temperatures but the year of 73 we had over two feet of snow. I can somewhat relate to your situation. In the south we are not prepared for the ice, snow, and extreme cold. I love the way that you put this together. Keep writing. Sara
